CLOTHING STYLE - Rather fashionable, or really modern and minimal. He sticks with neutrals, the few colors he indulges in being navy blues, hunter greens, and mustard yellow. For work, he’s always in a button-up and slacks, for professionalism, but at home, it’s usually jeans, gray loungers, and sweaters..he loves a good sweater. BEST PHYSICAL FEATURE - Hugo likes his laugh lines. The way his eyes wrinkle when he smiles or the dimples that appear when he laughs. He thinks it makes him look less intimidating...although not much actually makes him laugh in the first place.

LAYER TWO : THE INSIDE

FEARS -  He wouldn’t say he fears a lot, more like he’s concerned about a number of things; how some days his PTSD acts up a lot and he can’t seem to function well. The idea of accidentally running into his mother. The idea of being forced to go back into war for whatever reason. The idea that he ever has to fight again.  GUILTY PLEASURE -  Hugo is extremely goal-oriented and a very hard-working man...but sometimes, on his days off and when he has nothing more to do...he likes being lazy. It’s very self-indulgent to just sit in PJs, watching TV, eating chips with his feet up and giving crumbs to Traugott, just not being an active member of society for a moment.  BIGGEST PET PEEVE -  People who use their long lights all the time. The neighbor cats that roam where they please and knock over his trash cans.  AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE - For one that is such a workaholic, he hasn’t thought much about this. He didn’t think he’d live to be as old as he was currently so it wasn’t a priority for him to have goals...that being said, even if he was given every opportunity imaginable, he doesn’t think he’d do much else aside just...live. He’d like to see the world. Take photos. Learn new things. He’s already trying to branch out more whenever he has vacation time, especially since it’s currently very easy for him (he has no wife or children, there’s very little he needs to worry about).

Hugo has a complicated relationship with himself. On one hand, he’s a logical being and understands that the negative things people have said about him were almost always out of anger and their own personal character flaws and while he also indeed has flaws, just as all human beings do, he shouldn’t let these experiences dictate how he views himself.

On the other hand, after being told for much of your natural born life that you were a waste of space, defective, stupid, a mother’s regret and essentially unwanted...it doesn’t exactly make you feel good about yourself. And the hardest thing about it, is that it never ended until very recently. Up until he was 18 he was physically and verbally abused by his mother and then upon entering the military, more abuse followed--

....Okay. He did okay. In truth, Hugo doesn’t even remember the blast that he lost his hearing too, it knocked him unconscious and he still has scarring along the back of his neck and cheek because if it. the explosion happened behind him, sending him flying forward and...he doesn’t even remember that much. Just one moment he’s awake, the next he’s waking up on his belly, disorientated in a hospital bed. Also the quiet. He was unaware of this at the time, but the blast that initially knocked him out wasn’t the only one. As he lay unconscious, there was a barrage of more blasts continuing on near him-- thankfully Hugo wasn’t hit further but by the time he was rescued, he had suffered too much damage to his ears.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT.         His father left when Hugo was just a child, not even a full year old. Hugo only knows his father through stories his mother and grandparents used to tell him when he was small-- mostly positive, his father being a distinguished officer in the German military while also being a good soul, a charitable man who was well known in the town they lived in. His one mistake was marrying Sibylle, later growing tired of her demanding nature and how she spent his money. He left home one day and never bothered to come by again. Not even to see Hugo. It left his mother resentful and Hugo fatherless. Sibylle was Hugo’s only parental guardian aside his grandparents who watched over him when he was small while his mother worked. Once he was old enough to attend to school, he saw his grandparents less and more of his mother-- her temper grew worse as the years dredged on, blaming Hugo for her supposedly inadequate life and the burden raising a child alone did to her. His childhood wasn’t a pleasant one.

For as long as Hugo can remember, he’s always had a name other than his own placed upon him. It started with stupid; his abusive mother thinking her son was mentally stunted thanks to his quiet and solitary nature and inability to engage like she wanted him to. It grew to freak in grade school as he grew up having few friends and his peers always pointing out his peculiarities. He enjoyed his time alone, preferring the company of the small animals he would feed in his backyard or the neighbor's nice dog that wouldn't bark too much. Hugo did excel in certain subjects such as math and the sciences but languages were hard for him and anything that involved communicating with his peers was even harder. And regardless of his minor successes, his mother was never pleased.

Hugo has severe hearing loss in both ears after the physical and neurological trauma he sustained during his time in combat. He is not, technically, entirely deaf, but very close. At this point, he can only possibly hear extremely loud noises and even then, it's so soft and muffled that it is most likely overshadowed by the vibrations the loud noise would make.

That being said, Hugo does remember a lot of music he heard before the hearing loss and hums a lot. He really liked music and while he can still feel the vibrations from loud or live music (he frequents the local outdoor events his town puts on in the summer for this exact reason), he still likes thinking about songs he remembers from before. He was pretty into classic rock but that might have been because that's all they ever seemed to play in the Humvee.

Hugo is very tactile and particular about texture. It's one of the reasons he likes soft sweaters and knits a lot of his own stuff so he knows it'll be made just how he likes it/with materials that feel good to him. He doesn't like rough, scratchy fabrics (who does though?) but also plastic-feeling fabrics and mesh. Vinyl, textured tableclothes give him the ick!
