In a remarkable breaking news story Monday, a Chinese court found that an 18-year-old man who was executed in 1996 for rape and murder was actually innocent.

The story, reported by Chinese TV network CCTV and carried by China Daily online, said the Inner Mongolia Higher People's Court found Hugjiltu not guilty of the crime. 

"Zhao Jianping, vice president of the higher court, expressed profound apology for the mistake made in sentencing him, while delivering the retrial verdict to Hugjiltu's parents at their home on Monday morning. The court also gave 30,000 yuan ($4,500) in compensation to the family, and pledged further compensation," the China Daily online article said. 

The victim was raped and murdered in April 1996 in a public toilet. The article did not give many details except to say Hugjiltu was tried, found guilty and executed three months later in June 1996

Another alleged serial rapist and killer, Zhao Zhihong, confessed to the murder after he was arrested in 2005, the China Daily article said.
