What if Cedric Diggory became an older brother figure to Draco, and would stop Draco from bullying Harry on occasion? Cedric would know that Draco was lost and needed guidance, so he would try to make Draco become the best at being himself.

Over the years he starts following his own morals, instead of sticking up for his family. He starts to become friends with "Dumbledore's Army" and actually likes being nice to people. He starts to switch loyalties, but not completely.

Then when Cedric dies and Draco sees his dead body, but Harry is still alive, Draco blames Harry for Cedric's death.

Draco withdraws from everyone who actually cared about him and focuses on his original goal with the death-eaters.

But he can't help but think about what Cedric would do or say about him being on the dark side. He can't help but think about his new friends as well. How nice and kind they were to him, despite how mean he was to them at times, past and present. He did everything for his family. And what did he get? Power? Was that all? He thinks about his friend Hermione. She would surely be killed, wouldn't she? He wasn't going to let that happen.

He either 1. Snaps at a death-eater meeting and gets killed. or 2. Betrays his family at the battle, to join "Dumbledore's Army" and gets killed fighting for what HE thinks is right, not his family.

In Draco's sixth year, with escaped death eaters that seem to be particularly interested in him, rumours that Voldemort might be back for the frist time since Harry Potter defeated him as a baby, and everyone hiding things from him, it seems like his crush on Potter is no longer Draco's biggest problem.
