i'm not particularly happy with this piece but it does give me an excuse to lore dump a smidge:
only child of king stoick, hiccup's inability to awaken his holy powers and general... how you say... autism... has most of the kingdom and his father seeing him as a weak, even useless prince, despite the great strides he's made in understanding sheikah tech alongside gobber.
astrid has trained most of her life to be a knight, understanding her fate would be to stand against calamity ganon with the sword that seals the darkness. she wasn't eager to work alongside hiccup, to put it lightly.
but, now spending more time with him, she has come to appreciate how hard he tries to protect and better his kingdom, and how desperately he wants to unlock his powers.
said powers skipped a generation. valka was the first to discover the buried sheikah tech, her bloodline linking back to the ancient civilisation. the first guardian she awoke stole her away to the secret site of a half-constructed 5th divine beast in akkala, where she has been consumed in study since hiccup was little (er).
wingmaidens have entered the chat!! background characters will be as if in-game gerudo since it makes no difference (wingmaiden bg characters have no distinct personalities either way)
as the gerudo champion, i was originally going to make heather gerudo, but after thinking on it, i decided having her lose a set of parents and end up being taken in by someone else was more reflective of her canon story
to give minden relevancy (i love her) i thought it best that an actual gerudo be slated to inherit the throne from atali, rather than heather, who is hylian and has no blood claim
minden is a couple years older than heather, and they're super close. they're both warriors, but she held nothing against heather when the latter was chosen as champion. she's very proud of her cousin
