And then last year happened, the year he had debuted as a hero from the HPSC. It had been amazing and freeing for him, but it was as if you could feel the shackles cuffing around your own limbs and wings. He had promised he'd come back for you and after a almost year long legal battle with the HPSC for your custody, he finally did.

You walked out of the office building for the last time, clutching Keigo's hand like it was the only thing you could be sure of. You thought he had lied, that he had forgotten about you with the high of his own freedom.

You didn't have a bag, you didn't have anything except the clothes on your back as you walk down the street with your brother, letting him lead you to what he called his apartment.

You followed, as you always had, your wings tucked close like shields unlike his ease, carefree seeming demeanor. His wings relaxed behind him, his other hand in his pocket as he led. He knew you were afraid, but that you were also filled with a strange sense of wonder and fascination.

You were looking at the real sky for the first time, not the auditorium located within the facility that was made for flying types of quirks. Your first time seeing a lamppost, the imperfect cracks in the cement sidewalk. The new smells. Everything and nothing you had experienced before. That is what broke Keigo's heart the most.

Not the way you clutched his hand, not how you walked like you were trying to fill someone else's shoes that were too big for you, but how you simply watched. How you saw and attuned yourself to this new world you would get to live in because of his efforts. It was worth every cent, every hour spent labouring over his desk in paperwork and legal documents.

It took quite a while for you both to reach the apartment complex. He wasn't much of a big shot yet, his paycheck hasn't come in this week. This was the best he could do for now, but to you it was more than enough.

You looked so small beside him as he spoke to the man at the check in that the elderly man offered you a candy. You accepted it despite not knowing what it was.

You thanked the man with a silent but polite nod and let Keigo walk you to the elevator where you finally let go of his hand to look at the candy. It was just a small slightly transparent red ball on a white stick after you pulled away the wrapper. You look up at Keigo.

"It's a sucker, kiddo. You put it in your mouth and suck on it until it's gone."

He explained, knowing the question before you could ask it.

Candy wasn't allowed in the HPSC facility. Nothing with color or fun as. It was deemed a distraction from training. It had always been white, black, brown, and red. A lot of red.

You watch as he presses the button, putting the sucker in your mouth after you deem it safe enough to ingest. It was a new flavor, nice but nothing you have eaten before. Floor number six.

You arrive to the landing quickly and Keigo leads you down a beige hallway to a white door. He unlocks it with a bronze key chain. He opens the door and reveals a small empty apartment.

You walk in after him, closing the door, and locking it behind you both. The apartment was rather empty. Small and kind of sad. But it was better than the bunks you shared with other kids back at the Hero Public Safety Commission.

It was a one bedroom apartment with walls that were as beige as the hallways, a carpet on carpet flooring. There was a small little office table, a pullout couch, a little kitchen and a small counter to sit at. A small walkway that let to the bathroom and the bedroom. There was a TV sitting opposite of the couch and a loud AC unit on the wall.

Small, but comfortable.

You see the papers on the coffee table and Keigo rubs the back of his neck sheepishly, slightly embarrassed.

"My bad, I was so excited to pick you up I forgot to clean up my mess."

"It's okay."

You whisper, the first words you'd said since leaving the facility. Reassuring him felt like it could be helpful in the long run. You already felt one weight being lifted from your shoulders only to be replaced by another.

Keigo was hardly nineteen, he was already in the hero business and now he had a kid to look after.

It'd be easier for him if you weren't here.

If he had just left you behind, it would have been better for him. It was a miracle the legal system let him take you to begin with.
