Howard: Aw, Guinice-

Howard, thinking: Impress her, impress her.

Howard, out loud: Well, I'm a murderer.

sorry, i swear this is not how this was going to go originally, it just sort of happened…

Howard held his morning tea in his hand and stared at Vince,who himself was staring at the floor. Past the dark fringe hanging over hisface. Past the elbow patch he was twisting in his hands. Past his knee highwhite boots, the physics of which Howard could never quite comprehend. Past eventhe floor it seemed, and Howard worried for a moment that Vince would bore ahole through everything under him with that stare and wind up in China or something.That Vince would be alone in a strange land and Howard would have to come savehim. That it would take so long Vince would think he wasn’t coming after all. Solong that Vince would move on, make a new best friend, and forget Howard even existed.Forget that fateful day when Vince had professed his love at such a break-neckspeed that he’d nearly given the older man whiplash as he tried to keep up withthe steady stream of letters which, through some miracle, formed words. Or rather, one long word that Howard was trying to understand. Trying to ascertain wherethe spaces were supposed to go. And, finally, attempting to determine the meaning of it all.

Howard genuinely believed that all of these thoughts happenedjust as quickly as Vince’s pressured speech. He hadn’t felt his tea get cold. Howarddidn’t see the sun trek through the sky. His small brown eyes still held theimage of Vince staring at the floor somehow, though Vince had left the flathours ago. Howard was firmly attached to the thought that only seconds had passed between the last syllable leavinghis little man’s lips and his own reply – “I’m in love with you as well, Vince.Even though the feeling scares me a little bit too, it also makes me happierthan I can remember to know you feel the same.”

Until the words he’d so carefully crafted echoed through an empty room.
