One thing I haven't seen many people touch on, excluding the idea he speaks Spanish only but that's not the same thing, is the possibility Jake CAN'T communicate with Marc or Steven. Like there's a significant possibility he hears them in his head, but they can't hear him back. That they don't actually notice him in the mirror. That Marc is so steeped in denial about Jake that he cannot perceive him.
