Thump. thump. thump. You look up recognizing footsteps. Wait, we are not expecting visitors, you think. You place down your laptop on the nearest flat surface then head upstairs. You consider who made an unexpected pop up. You are halfway up when you see the shape of boots. It makes your heart jump until your eyes look up to see no one is in them. The house is actually just settling as it does occasionally every year. It still terrifies you.
The house is settling, and it's rather unsettling.
I've been thinking about this Edmund Burke quote a lot lately- mainly because after moving into my "new" old house, I've had to start thinking about foundation repair and how we will go about restoring this structure into the home we envisioned when we purchased it.
