This is the first record I perma-borrowed from my grandfather’s record collection and while he was still alive. It was the only non-jazz or classical record he owned and listening to it was like discovering an illicit and exciting world. The reason I purloined it is that I’d heard of Muddy Waters by then (around the age of 14/15) through my listening journey from Led Zeppelin to Robert Johnson to reading about many of the original rhythm and blues-men. There were all men in the information I had access to at the time. The influence of black blues singers and guitarists on British rock in the 1960s is incalculable, there simply wouldn’t be Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, (neither The Yardbirds or Cream), The Rolling Stones or Jimi Hendrix without them. Muddy Waters, known as the father of modern Chicago blues, was a titan in this field and arguably one of the biggest influences on a whole generation of musicians from both sides of the Atlantic. This album, one of his earliest and likely the first ever live blues album, was recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 and remains a standout in popular music. Obviously, I didn’t know any of that when I first listened to it as a musically curious teenager, I just liked what I heard. Muddy Waters didn’t write most of the songs that appear here, many that that he was most famous for: Hoochie Coochie Man – that’s Willie Dixon’s, whose Tiger In Your Tank and I’ve Got My Brand On You are also here; and Got My Mojo Working, by Preston Foster (nope I’d not heard of him either) but was reworked and ‘owned’ by Waters. The ‘Part 2’ encore of this on the record demonstrates the song’s power in Waters’ hands and voice. This recording almost single-handedly invents electric rhythm and blues, and the energy and excitement of the crowd jumps off the needle. April 4th. Muddy Waters birthday. He invented electricity, father of rock n roll, and that swag you kids talk about today. He invented that too. Celebrate him today because it should be a national holiday. #muddywaters #hoochiecoochieman #manishboy #gotmymojoworking #blues #rocknroll #chessrecords https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv15_ioHYF5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12tnki25ycacz

Muddy Waters - Hoochie Coochie Man (Chess 1954)
One of Chuck Berry’s biggest influences, Muddy Waters was considered by many to be the godfather of Chicago bar blues. He utilized instruments such as guitars, harmonicas and drums in many of his songs.
