maybe this is just me ranting.
1. an assumed name
2. a falsed or assumed identity
3. used to indicate that a named person is also known or more familiar under another specified name.
today, my favourite thing about who i am is that i am completely free to be and entirely capable of being whoever i choose to be.
ever heard of steven king? apparently the brilliant man writes under more than one alias. according to a lovely english teacher i once had, he has a few rolling around in bookstores, going unnoticed.
which is amusing to me because why shouldn’t he?
why shouldn’t all of us decide how we want to be known?
okay okay, i’m getting ahead of myself here.
in highschool, i was known, by most, as a shortened version of my given name. but it wasn’t the ordinary shortened version, so particular people chose to comment on that, frequently. every time a teacher called on me in class by my chosen name i’d hear one of the blondes saying “oh my gawd, thats not your REAL name you know.” brilliant young women they are.
my point:
every human is an artist.
every artist has the right, and probably, the responsibilty to be creatively expressive in whichever way they should choose to be.
and if, as artists, we choose to be known by a name, any name, other than the one we were given, to represent that side of our inner artist, then who is to tell us that we are wrong? or that its not our REAL name?
its just as much our identity as the one that was chosen for us when we came into the world. in fact, its likely that its more-so. because its an identity we’ve grown to create and understand.
so um, in conclusion to this sort of rant,
a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.
