A great pleasure to meet with the newly appointed Ambassador of Mexico to the United Kingdom, Snr Julián Ventura. In his new appointment, Ambassador Ventura will also serve as Mexico’s Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization, the International Mobile Satellite Organization, International Coffee Organization, the International Sugar Organization, the International Whaling Commission and the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (FIDAC for its Spanish acronym). Ambassador Ventura arrived in London from Beijing, where he has served as Mexico's envoy to China since 2013. In the Mexican Foreign Service, at home and abroad, he has served as Undersecretary for North America; Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Mexico in the United States; Director General for Asia-Pacific Affairs; Chief of Cabinet to the Foreign Minister; Alternate Representative to the Organisation of American States; Head of Political Affairs at the Embassy in Cuba and Alternate Representative to the International Organizations based in Vienna, Austria. I am very much looking forward to the opportunity of working with Ambassador Ventura on many projects to come, and have already enjoyed hearing new perspectives on Mexico and the benefit of the wealth of his experience to date. Great to host a gathering of 25 educational institution representatives in Wales and to discuss with them the ways in which they can best develop an international network to support students from México. Following that meeting it’s fantastic to see some of the resources that we created in the Honorary Consulate of México in Wales now being used as direct advice and information to international students. (Example here of one of our videos being used in the resources pages of Wales largest attended academic institution). I am a big advocate for the value of different cultures learning from each other and the perspective that students from Mexico can gain therefore from international opportunities. A great pleasure to meet with MasterChef judge and Netflix ‘The Final Table’ star, Mexican Chef, Colibri Jimenez. The BBC's MasterChef format is now exported around the world and is produced in more than 40 countries and broadcast in over 200 territories. On a recent trip to New York I went to visit the team at the Consulate of Mexico there to learn more about their work across cultural, economic and consular relations. It was fantastic to get an understanding of all of the projects that they are involved in, to hear also about the ways in which they resolve and address different consular issues, and get a new perspective on the relationship between the USA and Mexico, which is so important in the context of all international relations and opportunities. Learning as much as I can about the different economies, social challenges and cultures that exist within Mexico is an extremely important part of developing my understanding of the ways in which I can best support people. It was great to make my first visit to the southernmost state of Mexico, Chiapas, and to visit its capital, San Cristobal de las Casas, at the time the city is celebrating its 490th Anniversary. While in Chiapas I travelled around much of the state and to the borders with Guatemala got to know local and international artists that have made a home for themselves in the state. I visited some local education projects to understand the different needs and ways of operation here and am pleased to say have kept in touch with many of the people from this trip, who continue to provide me with perspectives on the issues that matter most to them.
