you’re piping frosting on the last cupcake of the batch you just made when your phone vibrates. the sudden sound breaks your concentration and you accidentally get frosting basically everywhere but the cupcake. cursing to yourself, you suck the frosting off of your thumb while you open your phone to check the text.
seungminnie: don’t think i can do movie night tonight, this assignment is killing me and i’m gonna be up all night finishing it :( rain check?
you furrow your brows and frown at the message. never in your nearly 3 years of being friends has either of you cancelled on your monthly movie night (except that one time you had food poisoning from eating raw cookie dough—seungmin thought that was pretty funny), so for seungmin to bail stings your heart a little bit. you sigh in frustration as you pack up the cupcakes into a cute little container and grab the chips you had bought for snacking before you slide your feet in your shoes, grab your keys and head out into the mild spring evening.
you know your best friend—almost too well—and you know that as stressed as he is over this assignment, he doesn’t need to be. he’s probably almost done and it’s probably not due for another two weeks, but he always wants it to be perfect and won’t stop stressing until it’s handed in.
you know he can afford a night off to watch bad movies and gossip and eat junk food, so you’re heading over to his place to talk some sense into him. you open the familiar front door, not bothering to knock, and immediately head to seungmin’s room.
he’s sitting at his desk furiously working on whatever major assignment this is, papers scattered everywhere and textbooks piled up and god knows how many empty cups and plates are on that desk of his. his hair sticks up every which way, and your heart swells when you notice he’s wearing the sweater you got him for his birthday last year.
by the sound of his furious scribbling, you figure it’s safe to assume he hasn’t heard your entrance—too engrossed in work to pay attention to anything else. it’s kind of cute how focused he is, honestly, but you have to ruin it. taking advantage of how in the zone he is, you tiptoe you behind him and throw your arms around him in a fierce back hug.
“gah!!! y/n!!! what the hell!!” he exclaims, and you laugh at your success. he glares at you while he readjusts his glasses, but you know there’s no real mean intention behind it.
“what are you doing here? did you not get my text?” he asks.
“oh, i got it seungmin. but i’m choosing to ignore it, because you need to take a break and this movie night will be good for you!!” you tell him enthusiastically. seungmin lets out an exasperated sigh and rubs his hands on his face.
“y/n, i really need to work on this assignment, it’s worth 30% of my grade an—“
“nope. no excuses. i know this is an important assignment and i want you to do well obviously, but you’re like the smartest person i know and you don’t need to stress out about this as much as you are. plus, i’m gonna guess it’s not due for at least another week.”
seungmin’s silence answers your question, which is all the confirmation you need to grab onto his hand and drag him to his bed, where you pull out his laptop and get netflix set up.
“there’s snacks in that bag on the floor—i couldn’t decide between chocolate or vanilla cupcakes, so i made both. so what’s our movie of choice, another bad netflix original we can laugh at?”
you wait for his response, only to look up confused when he doesn’t answer. your surprised to find him staring back at you, a strange look on his face.
“...what, do i have frosting on my nose or something?”
“no, i just—you’re the best friend ever,” seungmin says, and just those few words warm your heart. seungmin leans in for a quick hug, and you smile softly at the contact. “thank you,” he says again, and he really means it.
“any time minnie. honestly i don’t know what you’d do without me sometimes,” you tease, sticking your tongue out as your press play. the two of you spend the rest of the evening sharing laughs and eating snacks and not a thought of school enters your mind, leaving you to be carefree and enjoying each other’s company.
