It was raining outside the bookshop. Not heavily, it was the kind of spring rain where you can look up in the sky and not be clear where, exactly, the raindrops currently soaking you are coming from. The sun kept coming out, then going in again. Crowley imagined rainbows arcing over the roof of the building, which felt a lot to the former demon like the best of portents. He and Aziraphale were engaged in packing up the bookshop prior to moving to the cottage in West Sussex that they had settled on as their retirement home together. Crowley couldn’t believe his good fortune, and had never in his life been so unadulteratedly happy.
The sun’s yellow light beamed now and again through the windows of the small flat at the top of the venerable building, casting bars of warmth and shadow sporadically across where Crowley sat on the bed, deeply engaged in his rummaging. There came to his ear the swift metallic clip of footsteps on the spiral stair, succeeded by the sound of a familiar tread on the linoleum of the tiny landing.
