Even though I’m a big Lister/Rimmer shipper, I still quite enjoy Holoship. It’s great to see Chris Barrie being able to portray a softer and more romantic side to Rimmer in one of the very few episodes where he’s allowed to do so, with ‘Thanks for the Memory’ being one of the others.
When you add the deleted scenes to this episode - especially the one where Rimmer and Nirvana talk on the bed for a bit longer before he leaves - it’s possible to believe that he does start to develop genuine feelings for her, regardless of how you view his sexuality overall, helped by Chris’s sex appeal being ramped up in these scenes. He’s clearly enjoyed sharing intimacy with Nirvana and the deleted scene makes it clearer that she’s trying to deny to herself that she might be developing feelings for him too, possibly because she senses that softer side that presumably most of the people on her ship don’t have.
Also, when Rimmer returns to Red Dwarf permanently, you have to wonder whether he’s disappointed to lose that intimacy - regardless of whether he loved her or not - and that might have played into his backsliding a bit in his behaviour.
Overall this is just a nice episode to watch, where Rimmer gets a little contentment for a few hours and his inner issues take more of a back seat. Chris did once say that he would have liked to have played a romantic role in his career, so he probably enjoyed doing this one. Robert Llewellyn adds on the commentaries that Chris’s fan mail increased quite a lot after series 5.

Holoship: Rimmer is abducted by the high IQ crew of the holoship Enlightenment, who have abandoned love in favour of daily sex. Wishing to join the crew and leave the Red Dwarf behind, Rimmer must engage in a battle of wits to earn his place.
Meltdown: When Kryten finds a matter paddle on the Red Dwarf, the crew decide to test it out and end up on Waxworld, an enormous waxdroid theme park where waxdroids modelled after history's most famous heroes and villains are at war with each other.
