Only now do I realize what price was paid for building the ancient civilizations. The Egyptian pyramids, the temples and Greek statuesâwhat a hideous crime they were! How much blood must have poured on to the Roman roads, the bulwarks, and the city walls. Antiquityâthe tremendous concentration camp where the slave was branded on the forehead by his master, and crucified for trying to escape! Antiquityâthe conspiracy of the free men against the slaves! .... If the Germans win the war, what will the world know about us? They will erect huge buildings, highways, factories, soaring monuments. Our hands will be placed under every brick, and our backs will carry the steel rails and the slabs of concrete. They will kill off our families, our sick, our aged. They will murder our children. And we shall be forgotten, drowned out by the voices of the poets, the jurists, the philosophers, the priests. They will produce their own beauty, virtue, and truth. They will produce religion.
Tadeusz Borowski, This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen
A Friendly reminder these are what the internment camps looked like with the Japanese Americans during WW2. History is repeating itself and thatâs abhorrent. Th

This perspective of Elmina slave castle in Ghana eerily resembles a ship about to set sail. "In everlasting memory of the anguish of our ancestors. May those who died rest in peace. May those who return find their roots. May humanity never again perpetrate such injustice against humanity. We, the living vow to uphold this."
It is time to shift gears and recognize that the delegitimization of Israel is the greatest threat facing the Jewish people today
by Yossi Klein Halevi
Subsequently, the Soviet regime went a step further, from the erasure of the Holocaust to its inversion, equating Zionism with racism and even Nazism. The notion of Zionism as a form of racism was born in the Soviet Union. The regime understood that the only way to justify Jew-hatred from the left was through anti-racism. That ingenious ideological twist is the Soviet Unionâs posthumous gift to Western anti-Zionists.
Is anti-Zionism, then, the latest iteration of antisemitism? Much of contemporary anti-Zionism uncomfortably fits the historic pattern of both symbolization and denialism. In the era of anti-racism and human rights, the Jewish state is turned into the criminal of nations, a symbol of racism and colonialism, and now even genocide. Reaching this conclusion requires a heavy dose of denialism: the erasure of the Zionist narrative, from the millennial-old Jewish roots in the land of Israel to the relentless war against Israelâs existence, which has forced Israel to act in sometimes brutal ways.
According to the anti-Zionist variation of supersessionism, sinful Israel has ceded its story to the Palestinians, who are, in effect, the new Jews, both as victims and as rightful heirs to the Holy Land. We are not only colonialists in our land but, in our story, imposters who must be expelled from both. In their fallen state, Jews have even forfeited the Holocaust; in this retelling, Gaza becomes the âGaza Ghetto.â When a swastika is painted on the façade of a synagogue, it is no longer clear whether the perpetrators are far-rightists celebrating Nazism or far-leftists branding Jews as the new Nazis.
Astonishingly, the current rise in attacks on Jews coincides with the greatest mass slaughter of Israelis in a century of conflict between Arabs and Jews. The global assault emerged with the first reports of the Hamas massacre â before Israelâs counter-offensive even began. Antisemitism is a response not only to Jewish power, real or exaggerated but also to Jewish vulnerability; a successful attack on Jews rouses the antisemitic appetite.
The pretext offered for the widespread support among anti-Zionists for the Hamas massacre is based on two âdenialistâ arguments. The first is that the massacre was the inevitable result of the Israeli occupation. This argument ignores the fact that Hamasâ goal is not the end of the occupation of the territories Israel won in the 1967 Six-Day War but the destruction of the Jewish state. And it ignores the complicated history of how we have come to this point, including Palestinian rejection of every offer Israel has made over the years to end the occupation.
The second argument in support of the Hamas massacre is that it was not a massacre at all. There were no mass rapes; children werenât burned alive. This latest expression of anti-Jewish denialism has taken the macabre form of tearing down posters of Israeli hostages, even blacking out their faces â a literal defacement. Embracing Hamas requires adopting its denial of the humanity of Israelis.
The British Jewish writer David Hirsh argues that the term âanti-Zionismâ should be treated like âanti-Semitism,â removing the hyphen and lowercasing the âz.â Similar to the absence of meaning in âSemitism,â he notes âZionismâ for radical progressives is a fantasy construct, a demonic ideology with no resemblance to its actual nature. Historical Zionism incorporates almost the entirety of Jewish political and religious life â from social democrats to Marxists, from theocrats to Reform Jews to secular liberals. To reduce âZionismâ to a form of colonialism not only does violence to the Jewsâ attachment to their ancient land but to the complexity of Zionism itself.

While marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we should not forget that the battle against anti-Semitism still rages.
While 4,500 missiles rained down on Israel from Gaza, for no good reason, during Operation Guardian of the Walls last May, the international community shouted about âhuman rights for the Palestinians,â but not the right of Jews to defend themselves.
When such an attitude is exalted, stores are smashed in Los Angeles and New York, turning the ancient blood libel into a contemporary one: that Jews love to kill children. The trope that Jews dominate the world is transformed into an accusation that Israel is guilty of âethnic cleansingâ and colonialism.
Itâs an evil narrative that distorts episodes such as the eviction of Arab squatters from a house in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of eastern Jerusalem. Itâs a narrative that journalists embrace, ignoring history and the urban-planning regulations applied equally in the Jewish state to both Jews and Arabs; itâs one that disregards the benevolence of Israelâs Supreme Court towards Arabs.
Todayâs anti-Semitism is cloaked in âanti-apartheid,â âanti-racistâ and âanti-colonialistâ rhetoric. Anti-vaxxers suggest that they are suffering a Shoah because Jews not only spread COVID-19, but have profited handsomely from the pandemic.
Moreover, anti-Semitism has even managed to attach itself to the â#MeTooâ and Black Lives Matter movements. According to the latter, Jews are âwhite supremacists.â Ironically, itâs Jews who have become the object of Islamist attacks in American synagogues, where they were already targeted by actual white supremacists. In other words, anti-Semitism by now is universal.
All studies on the Germansâ cruelty that led to the genocide of the Jews highlight the crucial role played by incitement mythology. Henry Kopelâs important book, War on Hate: How to Stop Genocide, Fight Terrorism, and Defend Freedom, points to the way in which Jews were referred to by the masses as insects and beasts; as exploitative capitalists; as traitorous, parasitic, inhuman communistsâall dedicated to what Adolf Hitler claimed was the aim of âexterminatingâ Germans.
In a similar vain, today Jews are said to want to âexterminate the Palestinians.â

So beware: if Yom HaShoah becomes so universalized to become about the oppression of all minorities â which usually overlooks and minimizes Jews as a minority â wake up from wokeness. And beware: if Yom HaShoah becomes so polarized that right-wingers only mourn the New and New-New Antisemitism while left-wingers only mourn white supremacy â start crossing wires to transcend partisanship.
Remember the sweeping contradictions that have always characterized Jew-hatred, that most plastic of hatreds: flexible, adaptable, artificial, and lethal. Historically, Jews were too assimilated and too clannish, too capitalist and too Marxist. Today, Jews are not-white enough for the white supremacists who cherish whiteness, and far too white for the anti-racists who abhor whiteness. Jews are also too visible when bigots target us as all-powerful, and all too invisible when we complain about being targeted.
This Yom HaShoahâs counter-cultural lesson should emphasize that over-generalizing breeds hatred; it comes from defining people only by the color of their skin, the nature of their ethnic affiliation, their class, their creed, their gender, or their sexuality, not the content of their individual characters.
This Holocaust began with the European tendency to judge people by who their people were, not who they are. How dare we replicate that sin? We should be Americanizing Europe â and the rest of the world â not Europeanizing America.
