Giro’s Grave
Leopold von Hoesch, ambassador for the Weimar Republic, arrived in London in 1932, taking up residence at 9 Carlton Terrace, the German Embassy at the time. Today the building is a private home, but one small memorial to von Hoesch’s time remains: the grave of his dog, Giro.
By most accounts it seems that von Hoesch was devoted to his pet Alsatian, whose death in February of 1934 was sudden – the result of a run in with an exposed electricity cable. He was buried beside the embassy. The small gravestone lies at the base of a gigantic tree, contained within a small wooden and glass case that somewhat resembles a kennel. The inscription reads “Giro; ein treuer Begleiter! London im Februar 1934; Hoesch” – “Giro; a true companion! London, in February 1934; Hoesch”.
Extremely apocryphal accounts suggest that Giro received a burial with full Nazi honours, though this was unlikely as von Hoesch was not a supporter of the new regime. However, he would himself receive those honours upon his death 2 years later, his death perhaps hastened by the strain of serving a government he could not agree with.

The best cinema ever here in Dortmund. It’s located near one of the lost places of the german industrial steel cooking period, called Hoesch. I was there with my child’s for Christofer Nolan‘s Tenet movie. Great atmosphere and background.
