Just had a super enlightening conversation trying to explain my 3 main interests rn- the nhl, national ballet companies, and high fashion. I think I seek out highly gendered spaced like hockey and ballet bc it’s interesting to see how people negotiate their existence w the almost mythologized highly-gendered expectations of those spaces. Even at super competitive levels, these accomplished athletes are just people and they can’t embody all of the expectations of being a specific kind of man or woman that their profession demands, so the way that they navigate that over long periods of time is really interesting to me. It’s probably what draws me to women in country music too- people who live in a spotlight performing and exploring what it means to be a woman.
