I'm working on making stories and oneshots about Middle-Earth and here are my headcanons about Hobbits to go with them. I'll add a link to/from this post whenever I actually post the first one. (fyi the headcanon of Hobbits with tails will be included, and explained.)
The creation
In the First Age Eru allowed Yavanna to put into a group of Men a great love of nature and growing things¹. This group separated from the others and began their own colonies.
They did not like cutting so many trees down for shelter so they began digging and making homes in the ground. This eventually caused them to begin growing less tall then their forefathers to accommodate, and their feet began developing harder souls. Their hair began to curl more aswell.
After the War of Wrath that ended the First age, this new race became more scarce. In the beginning of the Second Age Yavanna gifted them bigger ears for keener hearing and tails to help with balance and stability.
Some time in the Second Age they split into three groups, The Harfoots who stayed by the mountains, The Stoors who liked the rivers and fishing, and the Fallohides who kept closer to the forests.
In the Third Age the three groups made their way, taking different paths to Eriador. There they would eventually travel to Bree-land and begin to merge the groups into one.
Courting
When a Hobbit would like to court another they'll make a flower crown to gift or a bouquet of flowers. If two Hobbits are already courting sometimes they will put flowers or tie a same colored ribbon in their hair/tail.
Wrapping their tails together is also common.
Marriage
Proposals are usually done in a similar yet larger event to courting. Two engaged Hobbits will each pick a flower for their intended the night before the wedding and the flower will be brought to the other the next morning by another Hobbit. Usually the best man/maid of honor²
For Took weddings it's common to ask the current Thain to officiate³. Same with Brandybuck weddings and the Master of Buckland.
Otherwise the head of the family is usually asked.
Children
Hobbits are pretty lax about raising their kids. There are some strict, overbearing, or old-fashioned parents here and there but not many.
A Hobbit is still considered a child until they reach their mid 20's, 25 being the typical drinking and smoking age. 33 is when a Hobbit is seen as ready to take on more responsibility.ā“
When it comes to teaching then the parents/older sibling(s)/cousin(s) are usually the teachers. But some richer families will also have tutors.
==== ==== ==== ==== ==== ==== ====
¹ At first I wasn't sure if I should add Yavanna as having anything to do w/ Hobbits, but I do like it. She basically adopted a group of Men and gave them green thumbs.
² The name for best man came from Bree, the Hobbits just decided to borrow it.( aka I couldn't think of a different name. Best Hobbit? Best lad?)
³ The marriages of Belladonna Took and Bungo Baggins, Donnamira Took and Hugo Boffin, and Mirabella Took and Gorbadoc Brandybuck were each insane in their own rights. Untill Sam Gamgee's daughter married a Took.
ⓠAs far as I know Tolkien never explained what he meant by "coming of age". Especially since Pippin is 28/28½ throughout the books and drinks alcohol and smokes tobacco. And I feel like Bilbo chose Frodo's "Coming of age" birthday specifically because that's when Frodo could legally be the Master of Bag end.

Gandalf does say that they are of a hobbit-kind, and perhaps this implies they are not true hobbits, or perhaps also their culture of hobbit does not practices this birthday tradition.
(Or maybe in the years after this event it became seen as unlucky to give the birthday person a present and the reverse started happening from there on out...)
But I am curious about this swap in birthday tradition.
Ok so hear me out. So Iāve been rewatching the movies because I love them, and a question came to mind and I need answers š Azog the pale orc rides a white Warg right? And it is directly stated that Sauron does not have the power to create, only corrupt what is already there. And where did the wargs come from? My guess is that they used to be the great wolfhounds, the hunting dogs of the huntsman valar, but were corrupted into what we now know. But my question is, where did Azogās warg come from? In the canon, his warg is the only one to ever be white. Who else had a white wolfhound? Celegorm the 3rd son of Feanor, who, was favored by OromĆ« the huntsman of the Valar. Soooo my theory is that Azogās warg is either none other than Huan (Celegormās hound since Huan is immortal and can speak) OR a descendant of his. Do you think this is a good theory? Did I think a smart thing?? Someone please tell me if Iām close šš I actually would really love to know! {Azogās warg in the left image, and Huan in the right image}
not only are there three distinct types of hobbits, but Frodo, Sam, and Smeagol are one of each!
Frodo is a Fallohide, Sam is a Harfoot, and Smeagol is a Stoor!
Fallohides are fair, adventurous, friends to elves, and they like to concern themselves with languages and songs (classic Frodo & Bilbo, but Merry & Pippin are also Fallohides)
Harfoots are brown of skin and Sam is memorably described resting his brown hand on Frodo's white face once. Harfoots are friends of men, of a smaller stature, and they prefer living on hillsides.
Stoors have an affinity for water as they traditionally lived on the banks of Anduin, are friends of dwarves, and though all hobbits have large feet but Stoors have the largest feet of all. They're also the only hobbit type to have some facial hair. yeah. when you imagine Smeagol and Deagol, picture them with a little stubble!

The Mullcans
At the birth of the dwarves, Mahal, their creator, dropped the seven fathers into the world. Durin, father of the Longbeards, was dropped in the Misty Mountains at Gundabad. The fathers of the Firebeards and the Broadbeams were dropped in Ered Luin, and the other four fathers were dropped in the Sea of Rhun. The Ironfists and the Stiffbeards left to go east from there to the Red Mountains. The Blacklocks and Stonefoots traveled south to Ered Lithui.Ā
The Blacklocks and Stonefoots lived in harmony, but some of the Stonefoots found the environment of Ered Lithui to be barren and rough. A caravan, led by King Thrambek, traveled south seeking warmer climates and greener mountains. Little is known about their travels during this time period, but somewhere in their travels, they befriended a small tribe of Men. For a couple of centuries, they traveled together. As interracial pairings became more common between the two, a new breed began to emerge. A strange cross breed of dwarven sized beings with large mannish feet. They were given the name āMullcanā which was (as best as could be determined) a butchered Mannish interpretation of the khuzdul word āmalkĆ¢nā or Halfling.
Eventually the Mullcans were all that were left of the group, and once they reached Sutherland, they were left with a choice. Sail west along the coast to the Blue Mountains, or head north to the Misty Mountains. Unable to come to a general consensus, the group split in half. The first group made it all the way to the blue mountain range of Ered Luin. They took to the wilderness, eventually stumbling upon a group of dwarves in exile for various crimes. While initially weary of each other, they eventually settled down together, and the first āpetty dwarvesā were born.Ā
The second group made slow progress, their numbers growing and splitting as they did (creating three clans of Mullcan). Some settled just south of the city-state of Rohan. Some made it all the way to the Greenwoods, but the majority eventually found a home at the base of the Misty Mountains. However, no matter where they went, they were given a new name based on the burrow-like homes they built in the ground: holbytas (hole-dwellers).

Magnolia āMaggieā Scriber
Born as Magnolia Lightfoot, Maggie was described by her teacher as always being a curious sort. She went through books faster than most hobbits could go through a meal, and still she wanted to know more. After hearing the great adventures of very important hobbits like Samwise Gardner, Frodo Baggins, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took, even Bilbo Baggins, she wanted to write down and preserve a history of the hobbits. The only problem was no such history existed.Ā
Hobbits were the sort to share their histories by word of mouth. It was how they came to be gossipy sorts. While direct interviews were perfect for her current family histories, it did little to satisfy her question of where hobbits came from. She knew there had been three clans: the Harfoots, the Fallohides, and the Stoors, but any information on where they came from before existing in the Shire was lost to time. Or so she thought.
An acquaintance of hers in Ered Luin had found something curious when digging through their history books. Something to do with the petty dwarves, an extinct species of dwarf-kin from the First Age. It seemed they had been born from another species of smaller folk. The kind of which the First Age clans had never seen before. It seemed like a promising start, so steeling her courage and packing a bag, Maggie Lightfoot did something only a handful of hobbits had before her: she decided to adventure.
Her travels ended up taking her further than Ered Luin. By the time she returned to the Shire, she had been to Tharbad, Erebor, Moria, Rohan, Lothlorien, even as far south as Gondor. The hypothesis was momentous and would change the understanding of hobbits forever. She immediately began writing and publishing her histories, changing her name to Maggie Scriber in the process. The following pages are from her findings.Ā
Welcome! Tales from the Shire was originally going to be a series of one-shots that I was going to write about hobbits. However, after doing all the family history, I realized I had SO MUCH to share that I didnāt feel like could be contained in a few one-shots. Therefore, I made this blog as a dedication to the history of hobbits, headcanons I developed from that history, and anyĀ ātalesā my fellow hobbit lovers would like to share!
Disclaimers:
Everything that I provide is based off canonical information, but I have invented my own twists that I will pass off as hobbit lore. Iām not saying my way is theĀ āonly wayā, but I will treat it as fact on this blog since that was itās purpose. You donāt have to accept it. Thatās the beauty of fandom, everyone has different headcanons. If you are curious about what part of my posts are strictly canon, feel free to send me a message and I would be happy to pass that information along!
Call for OCs!
One thing that I have noticed is there are several places where names and information about certain hobbits are lacking (i.e. Paladin and Esmeraldaās older sisters or Sadoc Brandybuckās partner). If you want to submit your hobbit OC to be a part of theĀ āTales from the Shireā, please click this form. If your OC is accepted, you will get a Character Profile and a commissioned art piece done for your hobbit. Please make sure to read the form closely, especially with regards to use of your OC.Ā
AO3 Collection
And finally, since this idea began as a collection of one-shots, it only seems fair to make a public collection for viewing and submitting. You can find the collection link here, and please bear in mind the following criteria before you submit:
Your story/comic/art/creation must fit to theĀ āfanonā of this blog.
Your story/comic/art/creation must take place in the Shire (but outside characters are more than welcome).
If you use an OC featured in this blog, please please credit the creator. It will be on the Character Profile so there shouldnāt be an excuse here.
There is no word count limit.
Tags are up to writer discretion. Readers be advised to check before you click.
All stories will be promoted on this blog so if you make your own posts, please tag me! Otherwise, I will share directly from AO3.
Thatās it for now! If I need to, Iāll add to this post which will be the pinned post for this blog. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any other questions, comments, or concerns. Asks or DMs are both fine.
