Hadestown Moments That Give Me Life Hurt Me #4
In “Doubt Comes In”, the roles of Orpheus and Eurydice are reversed.
Eurydice displays the unbridled optimism that had previously characterized Orpheus as she walks behind him. Her hopefulness is made evident in the way that the melody switches to a major key whenever her voice pierces through the fog.
However, Orpheus is now plagued by the inability to trust that Eurydice displayed at the start of the show. His transformation is exemplified in these lines: I used to see the way the world could be/But now the way it is is all I see.
