because i love angst, anon! but also because i have no control over myself lmao [insert josh from drake and josh meme]
not to mention i could write a whole dissertation on dabi and hawks being opposite sides of the same "endeavor hero worship" coin but we'll get to that later
so HEADCANONS. generally i'll stick to hawks' pov and let the reader decide where dabi's at, but i feel like.... okay, so he doesn't trust hawks, but he's fun and charming and dabi sees himself in him once they finally really talk to each other for the first time (dislike of the commission, unresolved issues with his parents, that longing to be a hero that dabi's buried way deep down where even he can't see it anymore) and then it's like.... classic italicized oh followed by some vehement cursing because shit! fuck! he should NOT be catching feelings for this dude! they end up as friends with benefits (dubiously friends, definitely with benefits) and dabi takes great care to act like that's all he's in it for. hawks almost believes the act, because dabi is a good actor-- but what he's feeling is often obvious if you know where to look, especially when he's been [REDACTED] stupid and can't help it. and dabi is... oddly gentle with him? like, any time they're alone together? hm. is hawks projecting here or...?
also, dabi's never been with anyone, at all, ever. dating isn't something you're really concerned with when your formative years are centered on a fucked up vengeance murder quest, you know? he assumes hawks is the opposite, because Good-Looking Famous Hero, but hawks has been in maybe one or two very brief flings, if that. he doesn't have the time! there was once when miruko shoved him toward a hot guy at a bar and he was just tipsy enough to be like, shrug, why not (it was fun, he enjoyed it, but he absolutely never called the guy back) and once actually with miruko, which was how hawks realized he can do the friends with benefits thing without making it weird (they left it as a one-time thing and she still teases him about it to this day)
anyway, dabi and hawks maintain a fwb thing nearly all the way up to the raid, so for several months. they don't tell anyone else in the league, so of course everyone else in the league knows. compress tried to give hawks a very weird mostly incomprehensible shovel talk about a month in, toga makes thinly veiled suggestive comments on the regular, twice walked in on them once, it's a whole thing
aaaaand then you get to the day of the raid :) which is :) extra heartbreaking now :) :) :)
