Dimmeydale Neighborhood in Wheeling Officially Designated as a Historic District
WHEELING, W.Va. – December 9, 2025 – Wheeling Heritage is proud to announce that the Dimmeydale neighborhood has been officially listed as a Historic District. This designation recognizes Dimmeydale’s architectural character, cultural significance, and its role in Wheeling’s rich historic landscape. With this listing, Dimmeydale joins several other nationally recognized historic districts in the Wheeling area, including Centre Market Square, Chapline Street Row, Downtown Wheeling, East Wheeling, North Wheeling, South Wheeling, Woodsdale–Edgewood, and others.Â
The listing follows a multi-year effort initiated in 2019, when Wheeling Heritage applied for a Survey and Planning Grant through the State Historic Preservation Office. Dimmeydale was surveyed by Heritage Architectural Associates of Wheeling to evaluate each property for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. After documenting the area’s historic structures and assessing the district’s architectural and cultural cohesion, the survey confirmed that Dimmeydale met the criteria for national recognition. Wheeling Heritage subsequently contracted Heritage Architectural Associates to prepare and submit the district’s formal nomination.
A historic district is a designation for a group of buildings that together form a historically or architecturally significant area. When a neighborhood is listed as a historic district, the designation does not impose restrictions or protections on the properties. However, it does provide opportunities for incentives associated with the listing. Buildings that are identified as contributing to the historic district may qualify for benefits such as historic tax credits.Â
