humph, it really was. for me, from the season that they started showing that barney and robin are a thing - it really bothered me cause i knew they wouldn’t work out and it would create a dent in their group as friends. and this is one of the things that i LOVE about HIMYM is the friendship aspect, it feels real and natural and just so endearing.

the ending was anti-climactic, yes but i won’t lie that i cried like a bitch at the last scene when ted stood outside robin’s window with the blue french horn and robin came out to check with her dogs like the first episode and i was like “yep, here come to the waterworks.”

but you cannot deny that all that they went through eventually worked as character development. yes ted knew that he loved robin from the first day but maybe if they had stayed in a relationship from that point on, they might not have worked out at all and even would’ve resulted in robin parting ways from the group for forever. ted wanted a different forever when he met robin, and he wants a different forever now at the ending. 

Not a fan.  At all.  He is a coward, repeatedly.  

I think it’s stupid.

Lily was always 100% upfront about her desire to keep her last name.  It doesn’t have any bearing whatsoever on her love with Marshall or desire to be with him forever.  There are reasons to change your name and reasons not to.  And each woman has to decide for herself.  

I dated a guy with the last name of “Dick”.  No joke.  Had we somehow ended up married, I’m pretty certain I would not have changed my name.  But the guy I did marry had a good last name and for several other reasons, I did change mine.  (Fun fact: I still have not stopped rolling my eyes at my mother, when she gave me crap for ‘caving to the patriarchy’ by changing my last name.  This from the woman who kept her ex-husband’s last name after the divorce, but didn’t change her name to her current husband’s. Sure Mom.  Whatever.  Talk to me again about the patriarchy when you go back to your maiden name.)

Ted and Victoria.  I LOVED Ted and Victoria.  A lot.  Of all of his previous relationships, she was the one I felt strongest about.  The one I think would have worked out if she hadn’t moved to Germany.  

Now, their second attempt at the relationship…..I’m not thrilled with it.  I never like the “running away from the altar” trope.  It doesn’t seem like a good foundation for a stable, healthy, lasting relationship.  To leave a relationship like that and immediately jump into another one…..I just don’t trust it’s going to last.  So I think there were a few factors going into it.  But Victoria’s ultimatum was harsh and unfair.  I don’t know that they would have lasted if she hadn’t given it.  I think they both wanted the other person to be the same as they were years before, but they had both changed.  

I’m gonna respond to each point individually.

1.) Robin not being able to have kids:

I think it was an unnecessary story development.  HOWEVER, I think they did an okay job with it.  No matter what her plans were, the point was, up until that moment, she had a choice.  It was under her control.  And once her infertility was discovered and diagnosed, it was no longer a choice.  It was a fact.  That is going to give anyone pause and make them reflect on it.  I think she may have come to peace with it more quickly than someone who had always wanted children, but I don’t think she didn’t care.  I think she was upset by it and had to grieve the loss.  (Even if it was just the loss of choice.)

2.) Barney & Robin getting married:

Those two specific people getting married always seemed odd to me. Neither of them ever wanted to really be tied down, they were both really scared of committing that deeply to another person.  It was a defining characteristic of each character.  That’s not to say the characters can’t change.  But it never quite clicked for me.  Probably because their relationship, once they hooked back up, was really weird.  It progressed really quickly.  If the engagement and marriage had come along after their first try, months of being together, it would have made way more sense.  But it was also the third proposal from Barney within, what, a year?  Them divorcing three years down the road, both made sense (because of who they are at their core) and was again, a cop-out, a cheap trick after an ENTIRE FREAKING SEASON of focusing on getting them married.  

This is the problem with the finale.  Season 9 stalled hard for all 5 (6, if you count Tracy) characters, focusing on these really brief moments.  Yes, those moments were tipping points that changed the trajectory of their lives.  But they were really small moments, in terms of the time that they occupied.  Then the finale took YEARS of stories and smashed them into 45 minutes.  WHAT?!  Those stories could have been told all throughout Season 9 and it would have felt satisfying in the end.  But no, we have Barney and Robin’s wedding, Ted letting Robin go, and the development and introduction of Tracy shoved in our faces over and over and over again.  That reinforces the point that these were super important things that were going to last.  And then the finale just ripped them away and cheapened what they had just spent 20 some odd episodes (not to mention the previous 8 seasons) showing.  

3.)  Tracy dying:

I AM SO FREAKING PISSED OVER THIS.  We spent NINE YEARS hearing stories about her, learning about her, creating this image of her in our heads, and having it reinforced immensely how important she was.  How she was everything to Ted, to the kids, etc.  AND THEN SHE DIES.  We FINALLY get the pay off of her meeting Ted and they RIDICULOUSLY ADORABLE together.  And then they kill her off.  It’s a travesty.  And let’s just focus on how Tracy was THE BEST of all the characters.  Barney and Robin?  Truly awful people, morally speaking.  Entertaining, but I can’t quite call them good people.  Lily thinks she’s a good person and a decent chunk of the time, she is.  But she has some definite problematic moments.  Ted….he wants to be a good guy, and a lot of the time he is, but he does stupid crap and doesn’t learn from his mistakes.  I think Marshall is the only one I can truly consider a good person.  Up until Tracy.  She was wonderful.  And so perfect for Ted.  

Ted should not have ended up with Robin.  Period.  The show was based on him meeting The Mother and how his life up until that moment shaped him and got him ready for her.  THE SHOW IS TITLED “HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER”, not “How I banged your future step-mom and she rejected me a bunch of times”.  The story that seemed to be set up was that Ted and Tracy didn’t have to compromise who they were and what they wanted in order to be with each other.  But that was what Ted and Robin had to do to be together.  That is not a good message to send.  They showed how it wasn’t sustainable so many times.
