The High-Spirited (Gamine) essence is small-scale yang. It's represented by a square shape, which is characterized by short, staccato lines and sharp edges. Its presence is energetic, whimsical, and playfully dramatic.
Features
Individuals with Gamine essence tend to have compact facial features that appear childlike rather than adult. They may have an impish or mischievous gaze. Some style systems describe Gamine features as "boyish". Their bodies tend to be linear and narrow, with few curves and a short vertical, meaning they are short or may appear to be short. They typically have few curves.
Items
The Gamine essence is best suited by compact silhouettes with sharp angles, staccato lines, bright colors, and eclectic patterns that embody its playful nature. This includes outfits with a mixture of loose and stiff fabrics, color and pattern blocking, mixing patterns and prints, undersized garments, elaborate detailing, and small accessories.
Considerations
From a sampling of clients who were verified in John Kitchener's system, most people have some Gamine in their blend. This could manifest as a small amount of playfulness in outfits, such as one garment with small-scale geometric patterns, whimsical accessories, or a broken vertical.

The seven essences are on a spectrum from extreme yang to extreme yin, with one essence in the middle representing a balance of yang and yin. (You may prefer to think of yang as "masculine" or "angular", and yin as "feminine" or "soft".)
You can view this system as a wheel, with yang flowing into yin, and balance in the center of the wheel; you can also view this system as a linear spectrum.
Let's go through essences from yang to yin. In light of Halloween, I'll also share the fantasy beings they may like to dress as.
Dramatic
The most extreme form of yang is the Dramatic essence. This essence is characterized by a rectangular shape and thus is associated with theatrical elements, such as sharpness, angularity, prominence, and definition. Dramatic is bold, intense, and can give the impression of "coming at you."
Dramatic can dress as vampires, drows, witches, sorcerers, etc.
High-Spirited (Gamine)
The next form of yang is the High-Spirited (Gamine) essence. This essence is characterized by a square shape, and can be thought of as small-scale playfulness. It is associated with a compact form of sharpness and angularity. Gamine is energetic and impish, and can give a rebellious impression.
Gamine can dress as elves, pixies, nymphs, god(esse)s of mischief, etc.
Natural
The last yang essence is Natural, which is characterized by a blunt rectangle shape, and is associated with soft edges and asymmetry. Natural is relaxed, active, and grounded, giving an easy-going and casual impression that may also come off as friendly, approachable, and earthy.
Natural can dress as woodland elves, dryads, druids, nature deities, rangers, warriors, vikings, werewolves, etc.
Classic
At the center of yang and yin is the Classic essence, which is characterized by the squircle shape (a combined square and circle). It is associated with a balance of sharp and soft, and thus is symmetrical and moderated. Classic is refined and graceful, giving the impression of timelessness.
Classic can dress as high elves, royalty, Roman gods, muses, knights, etc.
Romantic
The first yin essence is Romantic, which is characterized by an oval. This means it's associated with rounded edges that slope and curve, rather than bend sharply. Romantic is soft and sensual, giving the impression of lushness.
Romanic can dress as fortune tellers, sirens, enchantresses, love deities, countesses, maidens, mermaids, etc.
Youthful
The next yin essence is Youthful (or Ingenue), which is characterized by the circle shape. It is associated with small-scale details that are compact, delicate, and gently curved. Ingenue is gentle and petite, giving the impression of innocence.
Youthful can dress as cherubs, fairies, sprites, selkies, princesses, unicorns, etc.
Angelic (Ethereal)
The most extreme form of yin is Angelic (or Ethereal). It is characterized by an S-shape, which represents flow and length. It is associated with softly-defined curves that still have prominence. Ethereal is elongated and delicate, giving a misty or faded impression.
Ethereal can dress as oracles, celestial beings, fae, spirits, wraiths, etc.
