Tumblr Assignment #3 Higby’s concept of material, process, and idea seems to be applicable to every work of art. Even if I may not be thinking of those three exact words, it’s impossible for me to make something without weighing heavily on the importance of each piece of the triangle. I’ll use a jar I once made as an example to relate to Higby’s article. The jar was modeled after the ancient Egyptian coptic jars. Had that jar been made of glass, it’s meaning would have been greatly altered. Instead of being a storage vessel for the afterlife, it would have displayed the organs of the deceased. Even the meaning of my current “sweetheart” would change with a different material. At one point, Higby explores the idea of there being a hierarchy within the triangle. He goes on to explain that there is not. Again, his observations appear to be accurate. Being in a ceramics class changes how material and idea is viewed. The material becomes highly important since there is an obvious focus on clay, while on the flip side, the idea is exaggerated because our material is already chosen for us. Those two factors seem to cancel each other out so even within the confines of a ceramics class, there is no shift in balance.
