It did not strike her that there was anything off about these stairs; they were quite prosaic and real; the only curious circumstance was that hitherto she should have overlooked them in so miraculous a manner." Isbel Loment, discontentedly affianced to the nice-but-dull Marshall Stokes, finds on exploring the mysterious house known as Runhill Court that there are stairs and rooms that should not exist, windows that look out onto strange vistas, and mysterious music heard in an upstairs corridor audible only to a chosen few. She meets the house's owner, Henry Judge, and determined that hers will not be a life half-lived, embarks on a relationship lived in another reality that is more real to her than the world she is forced to live in.
