“you are clearly a talented artist and I don’t want to see you waste your time and skill on lowbrow art” is basically what my professor told me today after I presented my idea for my second thesis body of work BUT I don’t care because 1. i wanna do something fun and ridiculous bc i just spend like a year on something more introspective and personal and quiet and 2. my classmates were all giggly and looked really amused by my project proposal and tbh i live for making work that makes people smile and laugh because i think that is an important and good thing!
for a little more context, i decided that perhaps for this semester of thesis work i might just make a bunch of images that deal with... Cardinal Man! because it would be fun to work on and develop this character i came up with in school and i want to do more character driven work AND he comes from my interest in comics and illustration! but it’s funny, the second i mentioned comics, that’s when i started getting a more pronounced... not exactly negative, but just... disapproving reaction from the professor. not that the rest of what he said to me wasn’t helpful. it was just a little frustrating to be disregarded again just because i said “comics” in class.
cardinal man isn’t the only thing i proposed i might do this semester tho. i do have an idea to use to expand on my cloud drawing project and i’ll probably work on that AND some Cardinal Man works until i can decide which i really wanna put more time and effort into.

Tried to follow a video tutorial for the bat and it went ok for a while but then my bat started getting fucked up and I couldn’t tell where I messed up and it just got worse and I got really frustrated and ended up taking the whole thing apart and giving up. I want to try again but failing (or well perceiving myself as having failed) genuinely makes me want to hurt myself. Something something RSD. Just feel real bad.
