He doesn't think too hard about it, at first, just hauls her up and over the fence. She almost collapses when he sets her on her feet, so he doesn't let go right away, helps her lean against the fence and gain her breath back.

He notices it as she's wiping the tears off her face. Her hair is pretty short, hanging in her face, and dark, and her eyelashes are so long and--he has to blink for a second or two to keep himself from calling her Bucky.

After a little while she stands up straight and puts her shoulders back. Steve smiles at her; after a moment one corner of her mouth quirks up. "There's a place around the corner that does good pie," he says, "can I buy you a slice?"

"Okay," she agrees.

Her name is Emmalie, and after pie she looks much better. Steve walks her home and when they arrive there, he leaves her with his phone number and tells her that, night or day, she should call him if she needs anything.

He turns to go. Her hand grabs his, and he turns back to look at her.

She's hesitant, shifty, even. "Just," she says, "thanks." And then she stands on tiptoe to kiss his cheek.
