Reposted from @molecule_of_the_day (@get_regrann) - RDX, also known as cyclonite or hexogen, is a white odourless solid widely used as an explosive 💣. A more energetic explosive than TNT 🧨 (trinitrotoluene), it was used very commonly during World War II. In fact, the U.S. 🇺🇸 produced about 15,000 long tons per month during WWII and Germany 🇩🇪 about 7,000 long tons per month. This substance was discovered and patented by the German chemist Georg Friedrich Henning 👨🔬 in 1898, and is obtained by treating hexamine with white fuming nitric acid. Typically, RDX is used in mixtures along with desensitisers and other high explosives. RDX had the major advantage of possessing greater explosive force than TNT, which was previously used in World War I. It also requires far fewer raw materials for its manufacture, making it a very cheap 💵 explosive. Interestingly, some countries use RDX as a rat 🐭 poison in homes and buildings.
