12. LP5 by Apparat

Following the disbanding of Berlin-based electronic supergroup Moderat in 2017, both Modeselektor and Apparat returned with new projects in 2019. Whilst Modeselektor’s record was a brilliant, true-to-self collection of innovative techno and acid house, it was Sascha Ring’s Apparat that delivered the last great pure electronic album of the decade.

LP5 plays out almost like a long-lost Radiohead album, built on the ambient electronica and stellar vocals that has defined the latter part of the Oxford group’s career. That said, only Sascha Ring could produce this record, which is both highly accessible and never outstays it’s welcome, a difficult feat for many in 2019. Importantly, Sascha gives all the songs on here room to breathe, never overproducing or adding unnecessary extra layers and they are all better for it. 

From the string-driven pulse of undisputed album highlight Caronte, to the minimalist, distorted croons of opener Voi_Do, the instrumentation across all 10 tracks here is simply breathtaking. It is then the tracks where Sascha’s sublime vocals take centre stage that this album really soars, such as the mystical grooves of Heroist or the post-apocalyptic, organ-driven soundscape that is Outlier.

Ultimately, LP5 is a vibrant wonderland of electronica, that is only the more captivating after repeated listens. The record has deservedly earned Apparat a Grammy nomination and if there is any justice, LP5 will take home the prize for Best Electronic Album, because for me it is the best one of 2019.
