ARTIST’S CHOICE Frank Wimberley on Herman Cherry: “This is an artist I met back in the ‘80s whose color sense easily caught my eye and quickly became one of my favorite painters not only because of his ease at putting his compositions together, but also doing so with an originality which was his own. I had a great opportunity to chat with him and Kenneth Noland and Kenneth's brother, Neil, in the corner of a small after-party when Herman was featured in a fantastic show at Staller Gallery in Stony Brook. I only wish that I had gotten to know his great sense of humor and his willingness to share painting tips sooner. He was one of the East End artists who wished to me to succeed.” [Herman Cherry “Blue Painting” 1956 oil on canvas 11 x 29 inches] #artistschoice #onlineexhibition #frankwimberley #hermancherry #bluepaintimg #abstraction #1950s #abstractexpressionism #eastend #artistquote #artgallery #nycart #chelseagalleries #artfromhome #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAtrq6ll0rf/?igshid=1snal4f2hxcxl
Herman Cherry, “Red Tree, White Sun,” 1966, oil on board. Herman Cherry was a first generation abstract expressionist painter, member of the “Club”, and close friend of Willem de Kooning. Cherry was a peripatetic traveler. He began his career in California where he studied with Stanton MacDonald Wright. There he also opened a gallery showing the avant-garde works of the day. However, he most productive sojourns were in Woodstock and East Hampton, both artist colonies. His work is in the Brooklyn Museum, Guggenheim and MOMA, among Athens. We like this 1959 AbEx piece by Herman Cherry, friend and compatriot of DeKooning. Classic abstraction of the period. #art #dekooning #hermancherry #paintingoftheday #fineart #modernart #artoftheday #abstractart #abstractpainting #abstractexpressionism #abstraction
