We can mock or grow impatient at Paul's decades-long struggle to say he loved John, but we must recognize that as early as 1982, in a pristine and almost naked song like "Here Today" -which he openly acknowledged that it was about John-, he sang "I LOVE YOU" without any hesitation or metaphors. Yet, journalists and specialized writers spent years wondering to what extent John and Paul hated each other.
This is nothing short of brilliant and heartbreaking. It's about John and Paul meeting; it's about Paul's inspiration every time he sings the song; it's about Paul still mourning and celebrating John all these years later. It's rare to find someone who understands the love Paul has for John. Even if you aren't listening, you can tell the exact moment Paul sees John, and the exact moment John realizes that there is something special about Paul. It's brilliant movie making and shows how much he gets Paul and John...you see the pair of them mostly from the other's perspective until John picks up his guitar to join Paul doing "Twenty-Flight Rock." It showed up on my YouTube feed and it wasn't at all what I was expecting. It's so, so much more. Also, how freaking cute is young stop-motion Macca with his white sport coat and pink carnation and hair??? Every detail of this is perfect. Please share the vid. It deserves way more love than it's gotten. I also don't know if whoever made this is on Tumblr. I really hope this finds its way to Paul McCartney.
knock knock … mclennon
do people post edits on tumblr? is this a thing … ? say hi if u can hear me or otherwise im going to believe im posting to the void.
this is my first edit ever errrr …
It really doesn’t make any sense that John is SUCH a huge part of every aspect of Paul’s life and Here Today is the ONLY song he’s ever written about losing him. That just doesn’t add up, it makes more sense that Here Today was Paul saying, “I’m gonna say I love John in a song and actually tell the world that that’s exactly what I’m saying” when in actuality there are probably lots of songs where the word “love” is said and John is the object of it, and Paul just keeps that part of it to himself.

Paul McCartney spoke about Pet Sounds; Photo of Paul with Brian Wilson, Madison Square Garden, December 1989
Hey so was anyone gonna tell me that The Beach Boys Also have a song called "Here Today" off of Pet Sounds that Paul was absolutely aware of which includes lines such as:
If you listen to them, the two songs are very different tonally, with the Beach Boys song coming from the perspective of an ex-lover singing to their ex's new lover (it's more bitter because of this), but there's still this element of the fleeting nature of love. I think that honestly, Paul's "Here Today" can even be read kind of as a response to that, where the love is still here despite the person he loved being gone. Though, with that said, both songs can also be read as commentaries on the way that love can ended or interrupted suddenly, either via new romantic ties or death. Paul's is saying "I love you" but at this point the love can't be actively returned because John's not alive to return it. While I don't necessarily know that Paul was consciously thinking of the Beach Boys song when writing the lyrics, there's no doubt in my mind that he at least considered it when deciding on the title. Paul is a big Beach Boys fan, he's not going to name his song the same as one of theirs off a record he loves without knowing what he'd doing. To me, that at the very least means he has thought about and consciously chosen not to obfuscate any connection that might be read there.
(Fully assuming I'm not the first person to comment on this, but I haven't seen anything about it recently so I just thought I'd make a post about it because it's very noteworthy to me given that Paul is/was a self-professed Beach Boy/Brian Wilson fan)
