Plant of the day: Yew tree/Marjakuusi (Taxis Baccatus)
A highly toxic evergreen tree usually found in West and Central-Europe. Every part of the plant is lethally toxic (the needles, seeds, smoke etc.) except for the red aril around the dark seed. The taxane in the bark has also been used as a treatment for cancer.
It’s commonly associated with life, death, resurrection and for the Celts it symbolized a gate to the other world because of its longevity (a yew tree can live for millenia & according to some forever) and growth method (slowly growing new outer layers as the heartwood is rotting). In England especially the tree has been associated with graveyards since Edvard I had them planted to protect the churches from storms in 1307 and the tradition continued.

Metsäkuusi (Picea Abies) also known as “Norway spruce”
~ ranges a wide area from Northeastern Europe all the way to the North Pasific Ocean ~usually defined into two sub-species: the European spruce & Siberian Spruce, the latter some botanists consider to be a species of its own (Picea obovata) ~shady plant likes rich, moist soil (usually covered in moss) and a shadowy environment ~see the smol brown cone beginnings on the branch? ~had I taken this pic in spring/summer there would have been light green fresh new tufts with soft needles at the ends of the branches. They’re edible & sometimes made into syrup or used as spices or natural medication against rheumatism and respitory diseases in Finland. ~the resin also has healing properties. ~the main character in the Danish fairytale by H.C. Andersen where a young fir tree is always unhappy & can’t wait to grow up, until his parents are felled and he dies a lonely death drying in an attic long-forgotten by the family who had it cut for christmas
