7. “I almost lost you.”
Talk about unsettling. Alec had never seen a demon like the one he and Clary were currently up against. It had scales and fangs (too many to count), long spidery-web claws, and it smelt of death. Had Alec not been so focused on killing it, he might’ve hurled from it’s vile, repugnant scent. “Alec!” Clary screamed as the demon cornered her between one of the creases of the room where the walls met. She looked panicked and frightened and muttered something about how she dropped her stele. She needed his help. But then, what else was new? Typical, Clary Fray.
Alec got to her as fast as he possibly could and gave the demon a quick glance over before he raised his recurve bow and aimed an arrow at the monster’s head. “Please Alec! Hurry!” She cried. Clary convinced herself halfway through waiting that she was going to die. But, if Alec let that happen then.. Jace… and Izzy… would never forgive him. And quite frankly, despite the walls and effort he put up to shut Clary out, he wouldn’t forgive himself either. “Please, please, no,” Clary sobbed, much more quietly. If worse came to worse, should she die, should Alec let her be swallowed whole by this demon, at least she’d pass on and hopefully see her mother again. Any time Clary came close to death, that was her first pro on her short pros and cons list, the fact that she’d get to see Jocelyn again. Get to enjoy her mother’s cooking, her laugh, her voice. Clary could almost hear it now as the demon stared her dead in the eyes. It’s essence was dark, and malevolent but she refused to let it drain out her light. “Mom,” Clary muttered to herself. She could see Jocelyn’s face in her mind, see her mother smiling, urging her softly to hang on. ‘Hold on, Clary…’ Jocelyn says. ‘It’s not your time. Not yet.’
As if proving Jocelyn right ( a mother’s intuition ), the sharp sound of a whooshing arrow echoes through the air as it swings down and pierces the demon’s central core. It didn’t die but, it did get it’s attention. “Shit,” Alec muttered to himself, when he reached for another arrow and shot off four more, one rapidly after the other. The demon started chasing him, giving Clary some time to catch her breath and hopefully repay the favor by helping Alec out. Unless, of course, she decided she’s had enough of his salty antics.
Alec eventually drew the demon away, and down the hall. Shooting at it had only seemed to make it run faster. “Aghhhh!” Alec cried out in pain as he felt a sting around his ankles. The demon’s claws had scratched him, slicing his skin open an estimated 3 inches. Blood pooled around his pant leg as he curled up in a fetal position and screamed. The poison from the demon’s claws was spreading through Alec’s body. It started in his leg, paralyzing him. He couldn’t feel his limbs, which meant he couldn’t run away. He was so terrified about leaving his family behind that, their faces were all he could see in his mind. Jace, Izzy, Max, their parents. He’d let them all down. And right now, more than anything, he wished he could tell them he was sorry.
“Go to hell, monster!” Clary shouted, after rounding the corner. She found her stele and drew the sunlight rune in her hand. Fire shot out of her palms and the demon cried out as it went up in flames and slowly burned to death. “Alec!” Clary called out after the demon evaporated, and she rushed over to see if he was okay. He saved her and if he were in good enough shape to listen, she might’ve thanked him. He could have easily let her die but, he didn’t. That meant a lot to her. “Oh my god, Alec, you’re hurt,” Clary inspected Alec’s wound and tried to heal him with an iratze but, it hadn’t worked because the venom had already spread. “Don’t worry Alec,” Clary promised, “I’m gonna get you help. Just hold on.” It didn’t dawn on her in that moment, that she was repeating her own mother’s words.
2 HOURS LATER …
Clary got Alec to Magnus’s where the warlock treated his wounds. Alec had been asleep for the last hour, pushing the venom out of his system with the help of Magnus’s magic and Clary’s peaceful force.
He groaned when he eventually woke, fighting his own grogginess. “Careful, Alexander” Magnus advised once Alec attempted to sit up. If this was his own personal hell, it made sense why Clary was there. But, not so much Magnus.
He was kidding, of course. If it weren’t for Clary, he wouldn’t still be alive. That much he knew for certain. “What happened?” Alec questioned them both. Magnus turned to Clary who had glistening tears in her eyes. She didn’t understand why she was getting so emotional. Maybe a part of her cared for Alec, the same way he cared for her. In the weeks they’ve known each other, they’ve fought and bickered tirelessly but at the end of the day, he was as much her family as Izzy, Jace, or even Simon. She didn’t want to lose Alec any more than she wanted to lose the rest of them. “I almost lost you,” Clary answered.
Alec rolled his eyes; a sign that he was still Alec, and sat up against Magnus’s orders to take it easy. “You were hoping,” he teased. “You’re right,” Clary responded, playing along with Alec and easily falling back into their custom banter, “I don’t know what I was thinking. I should have let you die. At least then, you’d be a lesser pain in my ass.” Alec cracked a smile and shot back animatedly, “Right back at you, Fray.”

HE’S FAR FROM ALARMED when he first wakes --- though it takes only a few seconds to realise this body isn’t the one he’s grown used to, he doesn’t mind it much until he thinks to alan. his brother is stuck with a possible stranger, possible enemy, wearing his face... or, worse still, he’ll be met with an empty shell of a person. nick has see what it looks like when he leaves his body, and though the sight does nothing for him, he’s well aware that it could be disturbing.
it’s for that reason alone that he decides to get up and inspect his surroundings, soon met by a familiar blade. he recognises the face he’s wearing when he looks in the mirror, and if it is clary in his body, there probably won’t be any issues in his flat. on the off chance that it isn’t her, though, he showers, dresses, and leaves the building, heading towards where he knows his home is. it’s still early in the day, and there’s a possibility that clary won’t have gotten up yet, much less noticed the body swap.
nick knocks on the door to the apartment rather loudly for it being half past seven, waiting with impatience. the only thing stopping him from breaking in is that he’s not sure this body could manage to kick in a door.
