The Siege of Kenilworth Castle: England’s Longest Medieval Siege
On June 25, 1266, the forces of Henry III of England began the siege of Kenilworth Castle during the aftermath of the Second Barons’ War. The mighty fortress was held by rebel barons loyal to Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, who had been defeated at the Battle of Evesham but whose supporters continued to resist royal authority.
Protected by massive walls, a vast lake, and strong defenses, Kenilworth Castle proved nearly impossible to capture. The royal army launched repeated attacks, used siege engines, and attempted to starve the defenders into surrender. The siege lasted 172 days, making it one of the longest sieges in English medieval history.
The conflict finally ended in December 1266 with the surrender of the rebels after negotiations and the promise of pardons. The siege became a powerful symbol of the struggle between royal power and the rights of England’s nobles, a struggle that shaped the development of medieval government.
HENRY III OF ENGLAND
HENRY III OF ENGLAND
1 October 1207 – 16 November 1272
Henry III was the son of King John who he succeeded in 1216, aged 9.
He didn’t rule solo until 1227 when he came of age. When he did so, he was considered a weakling who gained little respect. His one achievement was the rebuilding of the present-day Westminster Abbey. His reign saw extravagance and civil war. He reigned for 56 years and was married to Eleanor of Provence; they had four sons and two daughters. Henry took administration into his own hands which resulted in a period of poor government.
A baron from a family of Lundy Island (Devon) plotted to have Henry III killed. The plot was discovered, and the baron was executed at the Tower of London. He was hung, drawn, and quartered. First, he was dragged to the tower by a horse’s tail.
In 1265 in Sussex, Henry III’s cook got into an argument with local villagers, so they killed him. In a vengeful reaction, Henry picked 300 people at random from the village, had them taken to a field and they were all beheaded.
The barons rebelled and Henry was defeated at Lewes, his brother-in-law Simon de Montfort ruled the country until he was defeated and killed at Evesham in 1265. For the rest of his reign, the kingdom was governed by Henry’s son Edward (Edward I). Henry died in 1272, aged 65 and was succeeded by his son.

On This Day In Royal History . 16 November 1272 . King Henry III died . . 👑 In 1270, Henry became increasingly ill; concerns about a fresh rebellion grew & the next year the King wrote to his son asking him to return to England, but Edward did not turn back. Henry recovered slightly & announced his renewed intention to join the crusades himself, but he never regained his full health & on the evening of 16 November 1272 Henry died in Westminster aged 65, probably with Queen Eleanor in attendance. He was succeeded by Edward I who slowly made his way back to England via Gascony, finally arriving in August 1274. . ◼ At his request, Henry was buried in Westminster Abbey in front of the church’s high altar, in the former resting place of Edward the Confessor. A few years later, work began on a grander tomb for the King and in 1290 Edward moved his father’s body to its current location in Westminster Abbey. His gilt-brass funeral effigy was designed & forged within the abbey grounds by William Torell; unlike other effigies of the period, it is particularly naturalistic in style, but it is probably not a close likeness of Henry himself. . ◼ Eleanor probably hoped that Henry would be recognised as a saint, as his contemporary Louis IX of France had been; indeed, Henry’s final tomb resembled the shrine of a saint, complete with niches possibly intended to hold relics. When the King’s body was exhumed in 1290, contemporaries noted that the body was in perfect condition & that Henry’s long beard remained well preserved, which at the time was considered to be an indication of saintly purity. Miracles began to be reported at the tomb, but Edward was sceptical about these stories. The reports ceased, & Henry was never canonised. In 1292 Henry’s heart was removed from his tomb & reburied at Fontevraud Abbey with the bodies of his Angevin family. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1272 #KingofEngland #HenryIII #KingHenryIII #HenryIIIofEngland #HouseofPlantagenet #Plantagenet #Plantagenets #History #EnglishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #D16Nov #otd #OnThisDay #theking #Medieval #MedievalHistory #medievalart #medievaltimes #EnglishHistory (at Westminster) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHqqMgQjFur/?igshid=1az72y5mt0knl
