I think somewhere around her thirties she toys around with quitting for a bit, right when it’s becoming increasingly unpopular, culturally. But in the end it’s too stressful.

Alucard’s very complex and something of a scene stealer. I really love the dichotomy of him being simultaneously the most and least powerful. And the fact that he’s a sympathetic character with plenty of screen time (arguably The Protagonist of the story) but the narrative never flinches away from showing him do some pretty morally questionable things.

Like fine, he manages to stay in something of a gray area because he’s killing nazi vampires and/or only fighting when provoked. But how he chooses to kill, and the way he relishes it says a lot about him. He’s clearly not burdened with the task, and if anything his two war soliloquys suggest he’d be just as content to fight not so reprehensible foes. He enjoys war, bloodshed, and suffering, full stop. It doesn’t really matter who exactly is behind the enemy line.

And despite all this, he isn’t demonized either! Again he’s a protagonist, and is shown to ::gasp:: actually have feelings. For all its focus on shock value and high octane shootouts, Hellsing presents a surprisingly nuanced and measured view of him. Something a lot of media does (regardless of how shades of gray it supposedly is) is to present characters through a fundamentally good or bad lens.

Hellsing, perhaps because its only real goal is to look as cool as physically possible, doesn’t force feed any sort of moral judgement with its characterization. So you get characters like Alucard with striking flaws but also with redeeming qualities and the end result is surprisingly well rounded despite how very little time is spent on emotional speculation.

However I always thought it was a bit of a missed opportunity that you have this invincible character who’s put all his stats in combat and generally being an eldritch horror... and then every single problem he’s faced with just deals in his strengths. Like he answers to a human, who in turn answers to the tedious mess that is bureaucracy. There’s so much they could have done with that.

The same goes for his shoot first, ask questions later tendency. For instance, the Rio sequence while simultaneously being one of my favorites, also irks me a bit because there could’ve been some very interesting conflicts wrt international relations.

They’re foreign agents who... seem to be on some sort of counterintelligence mission (maybe? it isn’t made clear WHAT the plan was for their trip aside from go there and hope something happens) and with the way they talk about avoiding customs and sneaking in I’m 99.99% sure they don’t have clearance from the Brazilian government to be there.

Like any focus on the red tape or subtleties of espionage would be things he’s presumably not as good at as like mind control or ripping enemies to shreds.

But really that’s a minor quibble. I can just easily turn off my brain and enjoy how flamboyant his sense of “disguising” himself is, and like lugging out a coffin in broad daylight then not even attempting to be subtle about compelling the hotel concierge.

Reading about them made me really interested in them too! I am particularly intrigued by Captain Gareth but they didn’t have much on him. I myself haven’t watched the TV version yet but I really wanted to write this out for you anon! I believe all characters, major and minor, deserve love and recognition from the fandom and I wholeheartedly support you and all minor characters! - Medinah 

Gareth and Chris Friendship 

This is a friendship that starts off as mutual respect for each other’s skills and traits. Chris would most likely go ahead and approach Gareth, complimenting him on his marksmanship on a recent mission. 

Once they become more close, I imagine them to go to shooting ranges and target practice together, having friendly rivalries over who gets in the better shot. 

Gareth thinks that Chris is too serious sometimes and tells him to lighten up a little. 

When they’re not on detail or missions and have a day off, they often go to a pub they frequent and chug pints together. It’s more of an excuse to sit and talk, and a form of escapism from their often dangerous and obscure lives. 

They would risk life and limb for each other; there is an unspoken yet strong sense of brotherhood that builds the depth of their friendship. They have a profound amount of admiration for each other. 

Working with/above/under Gareth and Chris 

If you’re working with them as an equal, know and be assured that you are duly backed up and supported. Chris is an efficient man and Gareth respects his equals. They expect you to be focused and ready at all times and ready to move as a unit. Teamwork is highly valued. 

If you’re working as their superior, expect Chris to be the type to come forward and be willing to execute very high risk objectives. He is brave and would happily fight for others. Expect Gareth to be cunning and tactical, but also take orders and relay them to others effectively. 

Working under these two would be the most fun but also the most intriguing. Gareth and Chris both possess good initiative and leadership. Chris is a captain who knows how to raise morale and keep those who work under him composed and calm. Gareth would try to make the situation a little light but also remind you he is there to reinforce you at all times. They would put their complete trust in every person who works under them.
