lmao it wasn’t a really military school per se but i went to a really fucking weird high school

it was like a magnet school where like it was technically public so u didn’t have to pay to go there but u also had to apply to get in??? and like it was themed (marine science and engineering) and really small (i had 70 people in my grade) and a lot of people applied there if the high school in your town sucked or if you just hated everyone you went to middle school with (which was me, with a couple exceptions). it generally boasted better academics, a cool open air campus, a marine-themed science curriculum, and a research vessel

the kicker was u had to be in naval JROTC in order to go.

so like?? they didn’t really advertise how much of the rotc factor really played into every day school life, it was more like “oh u wear a uniform twice a week and have a weird extra class called naval science that u have to go to.” but when you have a school where literally everyone is in rotc u become less of a school and more of a battalion and especially as time went on it got more and more military focused. u learned how to march. there was no gym, only physical training. there was a lot of brainwashing to try and get u to go to service academies and join rotc once u went to college

and lemme tell u, rotc is fine and all if you’re into it, but on the scale that my school had it it became downright toxic especially since it creates a really weird artificial hierarchy amongst ur peers. like the way the whole thing is structured is that u get a rank and a job within the batallion, and by the time ur a senior you’re basically running it with very little interference from the naval science instructors. which also means you’re running uniform inspections, managing supply (which documents who had what uniform items), and even inputting physical fitness and inspection grades into the official system. like there was one time senior chief (we didn’t call our naval science teachers by name, just by rank they were once they retired from the navy) just called me in and sat me down to input a bunch of PT grades for some freshman and just. left the room. i could have done anything. i could have given everyone 100′s if i wanted to. i could have failed the people i didn’t like. their fate was in my hands.

with jobs also came rank, which means some people were artificially “”””better””” than others. like u can imagine how toxic that is for a bunch of teenagers. like am i really supposed to salute some guy i knew tried to pass off a bag of oregano as weed in my freshman year and show him even a modicum of deference despite the fact that we’re basically playing fake military??? like people took this so seriously, i can’t even believe. and let it be known that people had direct control over the naval science grade, and thus the whole gpa, of other students. bc if you had a uniform violation on a uniform day at any time and someone noticed, officers had the power to do writeups, which would count as an automatic fail for an inspection grade and would thus impact your actual grade. it was kind of fucked up putting that much power into the hands of some teenagers.
