Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine: The Cutest Restaurant in Hong Kong
The travel bug has definitely gotten to me. Just last month, I went on a SOLO adventure to Hong Kong, the first time I have ever travelled internationally just by myself. I have to admit that it was bit scary travelling alone, especially to a place that I am not familiar with, meeting people who speak a language I do not understand, and a culture that is less accommodating than our own. If there is one thing that can lure The Hungry Kat away from her crib, it is the Sale Season! But Hong Kong is not just known for its shopping, which peaks in the months of July and August. This former British colony is also known as a foodie haven where the best Cantonese cuisine can be savored and found in any of its busy streets. So when I was not busy going around its fabulous malls and shopping arcades, I was busy eating! The first establishment that was on the top of my list is a place that I can say is the cutest restaurant in Hong Kong. I don’t think anyone will disagree with me.
Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine is a new restaurant located in the Kowloon area near Tsim Sha Tsui. It had its grand opening just last July and flocks of locals and tourists alike line up everyday to see its unbelievably cute Hello Kitty-inspired dishes. Just like any other girl, I am a big fan of Hello Kitty and all the Sanrio characters and products, so I will not let this opportunity pass to visit this very popular restaurant that everyone in Hong Kong has been waiting for. Even though there is already a Hello Kitty-themed cafe in Causeway Bay called Hello Kitty Secret Garden which opened last year, this is the first ever Hello Kitty Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong that actually serves Hello Kitty dimsum and dishes! So you can just imagine the anticipation and excitement as Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine finally opened to the public.
You can find Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine at 332-338 Canton Road in Kowloon just a few blocks away from the gigantic Harbour City shopping complex. It is accessible from the Jordan MTR station although you will have to walk around 5 to 10 minutes to get there. It is also quite near the Temple Street night market area. The restaurant is open from 11:00am to 11:00pm but I suggest you go there very early or during off-peak hours to avoid the very long lines which normally take one hour. They issue queue tickets to those in line for a more orderly process but they have a cut-off time of 3:30pm for lunch and 9:30pm for dinner. 4:00pm is their cleaning time while last call is at 10:00pm, so make sure you schedule your trip properly.
The Hungry Kat meets Hello Kitty! I got to the restaurant at around 1:30pm for my late lunch and fortunately, since I was just one in my group (huhu...), I was immediately ushered inside to my seat. There was still a short line outside when I entered so bigger groups may have to wait longer for their turn. Please excuse my haggard look as Hong Kong is really a walking and commuting country and I am not so accustomed to walking long distances. My doctor would definitely disapprove of my itinerary, but I’ll be sharing with you my other Hong Kong adventures in the following weeks.
Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine can seat around 70 guests with its Hello Kitty chairs and tables. They also have a VIP room for bigger groups but I was not able to see inside as it was occupied.
Everything around the restaurant had Hello Kitty designs and just couldn’t help but smile each time I saw Hello Kitty’s face or her bow in the mirrors, walls, and lampshades. Red and gold colors are prevalent in the interiors distinguishing this particular Hello Kitty restaurant as a Chinese restaurant.
It took 18 months to open Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine because the owner had to have everything approved by Sanrio including the interiors and every single food item on the menu. The hard work seems to have paid off as the restaurant has been a big hit ever since its soft opening in April.
Since I was just by myself, this meant that I had to share a table with other diners since they do not have single seats for me. I heard that this is quite common in Hong Kong where the restaurant simply puts you together with other guests whether you like it or not. Unfortunately, I was seated at this table with two lovers together so I really felt like a big third wheel to their afternoon date.
Thankfully they have an English menu so I could easily order the dishes that I wanted. Other restaurants in Hong Kong only have Chinese menus so pointing and sign language are what I often use to get my food. The main attraction at Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine are their dimsum dishes so I ordered their most popular items.
They also have other Chinese dishes on the menu like soup, seafood, main dishes and other items you will find at Chinese restaurants.
I was offered hot tea served inside this very cute tea pot but take note that this is not free. You will be charged HK$12 per person as a “tea and condiment charge” even if you do not order or drink the tea so keep that in mind if you are on a budget. There is also a charge if you order water in this restaurant so you are better off with the cute tea set. They will also charge you HK$28 per table if you want appetizers so you should notify them if you do not want this to be served at your table.
Here comes my Hello Kitty dimsum! Aren’t they just the cuuuuutest dishes you have ever seen?
The Hello Kitty Custard Bun (HK$62) are small steamed buns shaped and decorated with the face of the world’s most famous cat. They just look so adorable with their big puffy cheeks and those cute whiskered eyes staring at you. Her famous red bow is also prominently displayed and my biggest problem is really how I can eat and ruin these dimsum treats.
Even the dimsum baskets have Hello Kitty designs etched and engraved. I want to bring these home with me!
I actually thought of bringing one piece of custard bun back home with me but I wasn’t sure if I could keep it in good shape so I just ended up eating all of it.
The custard bun is actually quite good especially when the filling is still hot. The creamy and oozing salted egg yolk has that sweet and salty flavor that I look for whenever I order this at Chinese restaurants. I can’t say that it was the best custard bun I have ever eaten, as it is mostly similar in quality with other dimsum places, but it is definitely the prettiest.
I also had the Hello Kitty Shrimp Dumpling (HK$68) which are my favorite hakao with a Hello Kitty design. Only one of the four dumplings actually had Hello Kitty’s face while the other three only had her pink bow. I’m not sure why this is the case as they could have just made all four dumplings with Hello Kitty’s face, but it doesn’t make them any less cute.
The plump and juicy dumplings were also just about average in quality and taste but I really like shrimp dumplings so I was happy to devour all of these. Look! Even the dimsum basket sheet was shaped like Hello Kitty! This is just cuteness overload!
I uploaded my photo of the Hello Kitty dimsum items on Instagram and tagged Discover Hong Kong’s page and received a big surprise a few days later. My picture was actually included in their collage which they shared to their followers as part of their Hong Kong Summer Fun campaign. I was so happy!
Since it was just me eating, I could not order any of the other interesting dishes on the menu. There were Cantonese Sponge Cakes (002), Lotus Seed Buns (003) and Barbecue Pork Pastries (005) as well.
I also found these other pictures from the Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine Facebook Page so it seems that there are really a lot more dishes to choose from that have a Hello Kitty design, including desserts! How I wish that I could have ordered these as well but it would have taken me all day to finish everything.
Here is the complete Chinese menu from their official website. I can’t really understand the menu but the pictures do speak for themselves.
The restaurant also sells several Hello Kitty merchandise if you want to bring Hello Kitty home with you. Aside from the cute glasses, tea sets and other items, they even have Hello Kitty wines for sale. You must really be a big Hello Kitty fanatic if you want to drink Hello Kitty wines, haha.
Check the restroom and you can also find Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel waiting for you.
I think I want my bathroom to have these cute accessories as well.
Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine is definitely a place you must visit whenever you are going to Hong Kong. It may not offer the highest quality of food in the city where there are so many gastronomic dining options left and right, but it does offer absolutely the cutest food and the most adorable surroundings that any girl or even boy would be fond of. So make sure to put this at the top of your to-do list on your next visit to Hong Kong.
