Fishing Holiday

"Easy now... No... No... You have to turn it, otherwise you're just... No, you see what you're doing? Look at what you're doing. This is ridiculous."
The mighty Mechagodzilla, scourge of kaiju everywhere, defender of the People of Japan, is currently waddling sideways in circles on the sandy beach of Monster Island.
Not far away, in the White Heron parked on the hilltop, Captain Yashiro Akane and a group of pilots struggle to teach Field Engineer Chujo how to pilot Kiryu.
"No, no, no," sighs the Captain, "Take your hand off the throttle. That stays put unless you move it. Here. Engage pedal control, then you can turn her, but you have to- No, that's sideways again." She shakes her head in despair as the colossal machine begins to sidestep yet another time. "You got up from under a pile of rubble and fired the Absolute Zero Cannon perfectly, killing Mykitas, and now you can't even keep her walking forwards? I thought you had an 'affinity' for machines or something."
Chujo lets out a pitiful groan. "I'm trying. But I was under pressure then. It was life or death! Besides, I never... actually had to walk..." Meanwhile, unattended, Kiryu begins wading into the sea.
"Hey, stop! Pay attention!" Akane snaps at the young engineer as she reaches across him to yank the throttle back down to zero, stopping the machine in water up to its shins. "What did I tell you?"
Chujo hangs his head. "Tank controls are weird, okay?"
Akane only gives him a blank stare. "You're a 'Call Of Duty' player, huh?" she says, flatly. The engineer mumbles something in response, but it goes unheard, as at the same moment, Colonel Togashi enters the cockpit of the jet.
"Look sharp, everyone. We've got a proximity alert."
Akane shoves Chujo out of the control seat, and takes his place at the console. "What do we have?"
The Colonel shrugs. "I'll give you three guesses. It's big, scaly, and a generous organ donor."
"Fuck," Akane mutters as the rest of the pilots assume their respective positions for takeoff.
Outside, Kiryu glances down as the water at its ankles suddenly recedes from the shore, momentarily leaving a desertlike expanse of sand in front of it before rising and tumbling back in a mighty wave nearly 100 feet high! The massive wall of water breaks... over Kiryu's knees, and crashes against the cliff face behind it before subsiding. Out on the surf, the familiar back lined with craggly fins rises from the deep.
"Gojira recognized," notes the cyborg, automatically as it watches.
