David Lynch’s (b. 1946) ‘Twin Peaks’ (seasons 1 & 2: 1990-1, 'The Return’: 2017) is not only a televised work of cult-classic splendor, it’s also an example of the lesser portrayed suburban gothic subgenre. (This will be elucidated in a separate future post.) Contemporary academic, Lenora Ledwon, describes the show in terms of another, medium-specific, subgenre: 'Television Gothic’. In her essay 'Twin Peaks and the Television Gothic’, she argues that TV is “an ideal medium for Gothic inquiry. It is, after all, a mysterious box simultaneously inhabited by spirit images of ourselves and inhabiting our living rooms.” Strangely relevant to the events of the first episode of 'Twin Peaks: The Return’, don’t you think?
