I've never met anyone else in the wild who likes my favorite artist. Hello Meteor makes "cozywave" music: mostly downtempo, lush soundscapes which are a delight to focus to. Much of his work would fit nicely into the background of a nature documentary or playing in a laundromat at midnight in an '80s tech noir flick.
He's not *unheard* of, but he's niche. If someone likes synthwave or vaporwave or downtempo, they might know of him or even be a fan. But those are fairly underground genres.
I've never met anyone else in the wild who likes my favorite artist until tonight, when a few friends and I randomly ended up at an ambient music and light show in an abandoned carousel at the beach. The dj was playing some great stuff and I thought of asking if he was familiar with Hello Meteor.
Then I recognized the opening notes of "Is That Someone There," the first track on Causality Violations, and realized I wouldn't have to ask.
Over the course of the night he played at least a dozen Hello Meteor tracks. I danced with strangers to Pictures of Islands, music I never thought I'd hear from speakers that weren't my own. I watched the lights dance across the carousel roof during "Melon Skies" and realized I'm gonna remember tonight forever.
The DJ and I chatted briefly afterwards and it was like the Spiderman meme - I don't think he'd ever met a fan in person either.
Some nights, everything is just right.
