Tuesday, January 15: Hellfighter, “Tower of Sin”
The Geoff Tate circa 1983 wail that opened “Tower of Sin” made it clear that even though Hellfighter was comprised mostly of former Xentrix members, Damnation’s Wings wasn’t going to deliver the same brand of British trash as that semi-legendary outfit. To be sure, the song was rooted in thrash metal, but the crunch of the guitars had a touch of Nevermore in them, reflecting a power metal influence. For that matter, Simon Gordon’s vocals weren’t entirely dissimilar to Sanctuary-era Warrel Dane, though Gordon was a bit more melodic and less yelping. Perhaps most of all, “Tower of Sin” had a double-kick groove that found that sweet spot of aggressive and fast but not mindlessly frantic, constantly moving and giving the riffs space to breathe. Hellfighter didn’t release anything after Damnation’s Wings, but as “Tower of Sin” demonstrated, they knew how to deliver the goods with aplomb.

Jetrock headcanon of the day - Hellfighter
After his initial defeat, Jetrock dies. How couldn't he? His gear exploded on him and left him a smoking corpse. However, he's still the Red Faction's best pilot. They can't let him go that easy. So they recover his remains. Cut him open. Mechanise his corpse until his limbs move again. His heart beats again. His mind pulses again.
But it's not Jetrock. Not really.
Sure, the figure before you might have the same vibe. A soldier decked out in the most advanced military equipment the Red Faction can afford. But the more the thing lurches forward... Wheezes through its mask... The more you realise it's not really him. And whatever remains is no less simplistic in thought and nature than a wild animal.
Jetrock was never the smartest person. But Hellfighter is to him what The Masked Man was to Claus in Mother 3 (A game i should really play).
So yeah, Hellfighter does have a hollow mind. One that only carries the old pilot's ego and lust for triumph, fanfare constantly booming through his decaying brain and cheering him on to destroying you once and for all.
