I wouldn’t have expected Martin to be the one to be friendly to Helen, not after 159 implied that he felt wary of her and uncomfortable with her presence in the tunnels. But it totally works!

He doesn’t have cocktail of complicated emotions that Jon has with her, just some hallway trauma that was itself caused by Michael anyway. (And what DOESN’T he have trauma about anymore am I right haha water under the bridge.) He might still be wary of her, he certainly doesn’t sound like he’s got any illusions about her nature.

But he doesn’t have to trust her entirely to be like “yeah, you know what, okay, why not? Let’s be friends.” And in a lot of ways it suits their personalities? Jon’s reactions to people are often very emotional, whether positive or negative, and he has trouble keeping his feelings from affecting how he perceives them. Martin is very social and empathetic, and is canny enough to see how someone like Helen genuinely liking them might be a good thing.

Plus the two of them agree that Jon is adorable, so already they’ve got something in common.
