i've learned that going against your desires is very counterintuitive especially with shifting. though, i think that sounds obvious.
sometimes i have these ideas on what my journey should be like... if i should stick to the canon plot, who my s/o should be, and even what i should change about myself so i can better suit a certain person... and i've found that forcing myself to stick to those ideas even when it feels wrong makes things worse in the long run.
turning your back on your desires just makes them grow bigger & stronger, turning them into something all-consuming. that's why i think if you don't learn to let yourself have fun & let go, you'll get stuck in a loop (one of many, many others, unfortunately).
maybe shifting really is all about learning to let go...
