one reason why randall and laytons friendship is so just. ugh AAAAAAA is like. its teenagers dealing with grief and death. and you know how teenagers always blame themselves for things theyre annoyed or in anguish about. its that its so hard to put into words but like they had their whole lives ahead of them, randall was striving to be the best version of himself he could be, he was an honor roll student, found out things archaeologists of expertise couldnt, he had great friends, a brother who cared about him. the reason for his death was supposed to be his big break!! the planning and ambition put into this journey was the only thing he fixated on and it led to his demise hershel, on the other hand, felt like he could only follow randall to make sure it was safe, on top of the fact he was dragged along hershel was randalls only lifeline, he couldve been famous along with randall but he didnt care about that, he only cared about his friend ebing safe. he had his life ahead of him, he wanted to have his friend by his side when they went to uni, got a job, fall in love etc instead the last memory of hershel's best friend was him trying to pull him up from a ravine that there was no chance of both of them getting away from unscathed.
the like the fucking. knowledge he had a chance to have stopped it, the regret of not being able to. he couldve held his bestfriend by his side after that had he not been so arrogant, foolish. they couldve been together after that, told that story for eyars to come like it was a snippet from a rutledge autobiography but instead randall was nothing but a fleeting memory for 18 painful years. IMAGINE THE DAY AFTER IT. thats why i love the journal entries from the end of the chapter, it shows hershels points of view on things, it shows his experiences that we dont see shown in the game as its hershels transition to the "keep quiet and no one will know" mentality.

hershel's character is so fucking tragic and yes you could argue "oh laytons character is basic trauma to flesh out a character" BUT TIS GOOD. ITS ACCURATE CHARACTERISATION WITH ITS AFFECTS OF THE CHARACTERS' MENTALITY
i feel like as a teenager myself, i can relate the hershel in a way with his manerisms and how his friends acted n all. hes such a good character :((

amelia and flora are both in their first year of college (junior year of highschool). amelia is a history student who often sees flora between classes and in the library when studying. they eventually become pretty good friends :)) amelia gets a small crush on flora, she doesnt plan on acting on it tho, she likes them being friends. flora is aroace so shes unaware of it
