Your prompt: MORE OF ALEX TRYING TO FIGURE HIS SHIT OUT PLZ.
Alex grits his teeth and pushes the eggs around the small pan. Brown, overcooked egg covers the bottom of the pan and flakes up around his fork. This is Brendan’s fault. Brendan and his stupid 5 am text about how Carey likes eggs.
“We could do cereal,” Carey says, suddenly behind him. Alex jumps, surprised that he’s awake. “I like cereal, too.”
Alex glares down at the pan of eggs and sighs. “I have Froot Loops and Cheerios.”
“Cheerios sound great.”
Alex turns the stove off and moves the eggs to a back burner. He’ll deal with them later. “Cereal is in the cabinet by the fridge. I’ll get bowls.”
Once they’re at the kitchen bar and while Alex is pouring his milk, Carey says, “Thanks for having me over tonight.”
“Are you feeling better?” Alex asks, passing Carey the milk.
“Yeah. Just looked worse than it was, I guess.”
“Still looks bad,” Alex says, waving his spoon under one of his eyes. “You’ll have that for a while. Do you want an ice pack?”
“After, maybe. You don’t mind if I hang out here today, do you? I could call a cab. Or P.K. I already sent him to get my car from the arena--”
“No,” Alex interrupts. “I don’t mind.” Carey gives him that smile again and Alex drops his gaze to his bowl of cereal. “You talked to PK today already?”
“He texted me,” Carey says. “Wanted to know why Gally wanted to know what I like for breakfast.”
Alex feels his cheeks warm. Brendan is going to die, he decides.
“Hey,” Carey says. Then he’s reaching out; his fingertips press lightly against the back of the hand Alex is clenching around his spoon. He taps his fingers against Alex’s knuckles. “Hey.” Alex looks up. “Thank you,” Carey says.
“It’s nothing,” Alex manages to say, unable to look away from Carey’s eyes. “No problem.”
Carey leans back and picks his own spoon back up. “Even so.”
Alex knows his stupid crush has to be obvious all over his face. He takes a bite of his cereal and mashes it up against the roof of his mouth. Carey isn’t running away yet. That’s something.

Carey x Alex Now that Alex knows he hve a crush, how do he behave?
Alex lasts until Carey is snoring before he freaks out and calls Brendan.
“Chucky?” Brendan answers his phone with a yawn. “You okay?”
“Carey’s hot.”
“What?”
Alex presses his face against the cool exterior of his fridge. “I mean, I think Carey’s hot.”
“Well, yeah, but--” Brendan trails off and Alex groans. “You like him.”
“What do I do?” Alex asks, sliding a magnet back and forth.
“You’re asking me for advice?” Brendan suddenly sounds very awake and delighted.
“I must be crazy.”
“You should tell him.”
“You’re the worst,” Alex says, pushing away from his fridge. “Why did I call you?”
“Because I’m awesome.”
“The worst,” Alex replies, but he’s smiling. Brendan starts brainstorming grand gestures Alex could do, each more ridiculous than the one before. Alex rejects each one easily, teasing Brendan for all of his bad ideas.
Finally Brendan stops and says, “All right, hot shot, give me a better idea than weaving the net with roses. That’s damn romantic and you know it.”
“Breakfast,” Alex says, looking around his kitchen. “I guess I could start with breakfast.”
“I’ll text PK and find out what he likes.”
“Don’t.”
“I’ll be subtle. I’m the king of subtle.”
“You aren’t.”
“Am so. You’ll see. Good luck, Chucky.”
“Thanks Brendan. Night.”
“Night.”
Alex spins his phone on his counter. He’s definitely not telling Carey anything, but he can do breakfast. Breakfast will be good.
number 29 Paring Carey Price x Alex Galchenyuk
Brendan is running his mouth like the idiot he is and when Alex rolls his eyes, he catches Pricey tucking away a knowing smile. And, later, when P.K. starts pontificating why Pricey needs a new suit, Alex catches his eye and gets it.
“How did we get stuck as the sane ones?” he mutters to Pricey as they file out of the locker.
Pricey just gives him a sly smile. But then he bumps Alex’s shoulder when they can hear Brendan boasting about some video game before they turn a corner and says, “Someone has to be.”
Alex knows the team has better candidates for “the sane ones” than him, others Carey could trade raised brows with, but no one else on the team has best friends like they do. Someone else might not get it, might think they were bonding at Brendan and P.K.’s expense, rather than at their own. Each minute headshake wasn’t ‘can you believe this guy’ and more ‘can you believe how much we care about these guys?’
Alex saves up stories to share with Carey--the little things that don’t happen in the locker room or on the ice. And their conversations drift until a disagreement over the funniest movie of all time leads them to weekly movie nights watching The Big Lebowski; American Pie; Planes, Trains, & Automobiles; and The Princess Bride...among others.
Carey’s one of those people who makes snarky comments during movies and sometimes Alex isn’t sure if he’s laughing more because the movie or Carey.
And Alex is proud of this new friendship. Brendan sulks, asking why he isn’t allowed at movie nights, but Alex fends him off, occasionally by calling in favors with other teammates to keep Brendan occupied. Brendan is his best friend, whether he always likes to admit it or not, but movie nights are for him and Carey.
He doesn’t really think through why he spends so much effort keeping them that way until they play the Leafs late in the season.
Afterward Alex will watch the tape a thousand times trying to figure out what happened, but the sequence of events will never fully line up, never quite make sense shifting from a word written in a foreign alphabet to one he knows too well and has written over and over until it no longer looks real.
The play ends with Carey on the ice, helmet off, out cold. Blood streaks beneath his nose. And, at first, Alex can’t move. Then he is bubbling over with hot fury, eager to punch someone, destroy whoever is to blame for Carey lying so still on the ice.
His line is called off the ice. When the coach sees Alex, he tilts his head toward the tunnel. “Period’s nearly done. Go.”
Alex rips down the tunnel before he can ask or even wonder “why.”
Carey is upright when Alex finds him. Alex can’t stop himself from reaching out and touching the bruise collecting beneath one of Carey’s eyes. “I thought--” He stops, pulls back his hand. “You looked like you were dead.”
Carey’s response is silent, but Alex knows how to read the forced skepticism in his brow and the genuine concern in his eyes. And, shit, Alex finally gets why he works so hard to keep his ban against Brendan at movie nights.
The concern grows in Carey’s face, forming a line between his brows and his lips dip into a frown. “I’m all right. It looks worse than it is.”
“I’m glad,” Alex says, trying desperately for cool. “Concussion?”
“No symptoms yet.”
“Do you want to stay with me tonight?” Alex blurts out, his eyes widening in horror. He’s only just realized he has a crush and he’s already making a fool of himself. “Just in case,” he adds, as if that would save him.
Carey smiles. “Going to take care of me, Alex?”
“Yes,” Alex says, more honestly than he’d like.
Carey blinks in surprise, but then his smile widens into a happy and open grin Alex has rarely gotten to see. “Then, yeah,” Carey says. “Sounds like a plan to me.”
hegge replied to your post: hegge answered your post: Why do they ...
Do they think it’s just a weird looking o? And couldn’t they do some research?
I have no idea. All I know is that it looks stupid and ugly, and it actually makes me like the band less. because it’s so annoying to read their lyrics
