FDA approves new drug to treat specific form of high cholesterol
Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) is an inherited condition that causes higher levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, the bad kind of cholesterol). Despite use of statins, diet changes, and exercise, this inherited condition can put a person at higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and death.
In response to this, the FDA has approved an injectable cholesterol-lowering treatment. Praluent (alirocumab) is a bi-monthly subcutaneous (just below the skin) injectable that lowers LDL in patients with HeFH or patients with clinical atherosclerotic (clogged arteries) cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks or stroke.
So, you might be asking with all of these available drugs on the market to lower cholesterol, why is this one important? Well, first, Praluent can be used with current statin treatment options to lower LDL even further. This is important because some patients with HeFH, no matter what dose of medications they are on, still suffer from higher cholesterol levels. Second, this is a brand new target in the body that this medication binds to. Praluent inhibits receptors in the body known as proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9). This PCSK9 substance, that is present in all of our bodies, reduces the number of receptors on the liver that remove LDL cholesterol from the blood. Using Praluent inhibits this substance from doing that, leveling more receptors available in the liver to remove LDL cholesterol from the body, thus lowering LDL cholesterol and reducing risk of heart attacks and stroke.
This new treatment has promise and shows that the drug industry is finding newer ways for treatments of older diseases. Let’s hope they can keep these new discoveries coming in the safest manner possible
