I wanted to scream. A scream is an A. A is a scream. A scream. A person. What am I?

A scream welled up inside me, desperate for release. A scream, like the 'A' grade I relentlessly pursued. A scream that embodied my identity, my worth. Who was I?

“Ms Li, we’re here.” 3 years. 3 years of coming to this school. And every year it has remained unchanged—the same old gate, the same cobblestone and the same line of butlers to take your things. Unchanged. Uniformed. Conforming. 

“女儿啊... 好好读书... Good luck with your O levels.” My parents never came to see me. All they wanted to see was “A”. Maybe that’s why they called me “Astris”. A*. Asterix. It sounded the same to my parents whose first language wasn’t English.  

It was the same routine. The butlers would move my things into my dorm and I would spend the rest of the day revising for the first lesson the next day. But today was different. He was here. Zeng Liwei. Zeng Liwei who dethroned me in the rankings last year. Zeng Liwei and his smug smile. How could he just stand there smirking at me? How could he? 

“Li.”

“Not in the mood, Zeng.”

“I was just greeting you.” His Chinese accent resonated strongly, his attempts to conceal it were amusing.

“As I’ve said. Not in the mood.”

An idiot. He was an idiot. A sudden pressure on my back shocked me as somebody’s hands covered my eyes.

“Guess who!”

“I missed you too, Zel.” 

Zelmira Frances. The smartest girl in our school. She was so smart that she was untouchable. For three years, she had claimed the top spot in every subject, achieving perfect scores effortlessly. Dedicated, unwavering, unbreakable. Her once cascading tawny locks had been transformed into a stylish bob, and her mossy green eyes remained as enchanting as ever, drawing me in just as warmly as her embrace.

“Long time no see, Astris.” Rhory was here too. It made sense. Both Liwei and Zelmira were here. His best friend and his crush. The Honourable Rhory Byrnes, Zeng Liwei and the ‘love of his life’, Zelmira Frances. 

I’m joking. Rhory was my best friend. We’d known each other for the longest time. My mother had friends in Ireland, and by chance, one of them became Rhory's stepmother. During my formative years in Greece, he was my steadfast companion. We bonded over our shared love for ice hockey, though I eventually moved on to fencing while he remained devoted to the sport. When I returned to China, we believed we would never see each other again. Then fate intervened, enrolling us both in this boarding school.  See the rest on @/dysophien on wattpad :O
