This is a vivid graphic history of the Chinese experience in North America over the last 150 years, beginning with the immigration to "Gold Mountain" (the Chinese colloquialism for North America) in the 1800s, through decades of discrimination, subjugation, and separation from loved ones. Based on historical documents and interviews with elders, “Escape to Gold Mountain” is also the epic story of the Wong family as they traverse these challenges with hope and determination, creating an immigrant's legacy in their new home. David H.T. Wong has been an activist in Vancouver for many years, working with the Chinese Canadian community around redress for Canada’s racist #headtax policy. This is a copy of a #Chinese passport allowing a worker passage from Canton to Canada. Between 1858 and 1884, Chinese people enjoyed unrestricted entry into the country. In 1872 they lost the right to vote in British Columbia, buy Crown land, or be employed in public works projects. Increasing #discrimination towards the Chinese eventually led to the introduction of a $50 Head Tax in 1885. This was increased to $100 in 1900 and $500 in 1903. Today the Head Tax remains a bone of contention for descendants of Chinese immigrants who were assessed the tax and there are ongoing efforts to get the current government to address this. #steveston #thevillagelife #IdeaRC #visualstory #immigration #headtax (at Britannia Heritage Shipyard)
