Glad I could be of help! I absolutely believe you, & it's honestly always a valid concern. When I was in uni, everyone always said it was "good" to be a STEM major because those jobs were always "stable", but because they preached that to my generation so much, too many of us got STEM degrees that it saturated the job market. That, coupled with the current defunding of so many scientific operations really screwed us all over. I don't mean to make that sound disheartening, though! Just wanted to point out that your concerns about your degree/job prospects is very valid & should certainly be considered, but also don't be too wrapped up in it because we truthfully will never truly know. A LOT can change from the time you start your degree to the time you finish it, sometimes for the better!
It depends on what field you're in, but it does also sound like to me that there are more jobs out there than is being shared. In STEM fields rn, we definitely need people, but because of all the funding issues many places aren't hiring (or are offering low pay/short-term positions). Based on that & what I've heard from other fields, it seems like there's definitely a need for more employees, it's just a matter of organizations not wanting to hire them (or doing exclusively internal hires) or organizations being so desperate for employees that they'll hire anyone, sometimes regardless of their experience or education.
I hope that all doesn't sound bleak...what I'm trying to say is it's good that you're very aware & thoughtful about your degree/education, but don't be too harsh on yourself about finding the "perfect" & "safe" career because it really doesn't exist (or at least, it constantly changes every few years). I genuinely believe that as long as you choose to study/do what you love, the rest is much easier to navigate than if you choose a lucrative career but you hated it. But of course, that's upto you to decide, & no matter what decision you make, just know that it won't be the "wrong" decision, so long as it's right by you 🖤
(No worries! I forgot to reply, so apologies for my very late one now)
the issue is that im in art history and there is already not much job now and i don't think its gonna improve any time soon.
i know the skills are kinda important so i'll at least have that but thats not a whole lot and probably wont be enough
so like my only options is sticking with it, get a master, and then hope that i can get a job or change and go into something that has more job options and is less narrow even though i wont be what i really like
so in either case im kinda fucked? idk im not smart enough nor do i have any prerequisite for any STEM majors so i kinda have to stay in the non-STEM realm and hope not everything gets replaced by AI
but yeah thank you for sharing your thoughts on the subject, its really nice of you to take the time to do so
(sorry again for the late replyyy but it was halloween and between the st trick-or-treat event and mid terms i lost my mind 😭)
