“Are you gonna tell..?”

If science had a sound, it would be this one: hundreds of voices echoing in a cavernous auditorium, underscored by the hum of electricity and the crackle of flames. It’s Daniel’s favorite composition, a piece of music that makes him feel at home. He walks up and down the rows of tri-fold display boards, each manned by one or two or five young people, bright-eyed and dressed in their academic finery. He has a clipboard tucked under one arm, the words New England Regional Science Fair emblazoned on his lanyard. Being asked to be a judge at this event was one of the greatest honors of his post-doctoral career; he remembers being nine, barely taller than his own display, stammering through his presentation on the genetics of bioluminescence all the way to the first place prize. He wonders who will feel that special pride at the end of the weekend.

He stops at the next table on his list, where a young man, tall and lanky, stands waiting. Daniel smiles at him. “Hey there! What’s your name?”
